PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An employee who was killed in a shooting at a Safeway supermarket in Bend, Oregon, attacked the gunman in the produce section and tried to disarm him, likely preventing more deaths, authorities said Monday.

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP Drugs and Organized Crime Unit arrested a 40-year-old Chilliwack woman for the possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

VANCOUVER — Passengers on an Alaska cruise ship are stranded aboard the vessel in Vancouver, with the cruise line blaming job action by British Columbia tugboat workers.

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Bulldogs have named Laura Fortino as the Ontario Hockey League’s first-ever female assistant coach on Monday.
Fortino, a Hamilton native and a former member of the Canadian women’s national team, was also appointed as the team’s director of player of development.

OTTAWA — Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino issued new directives today on the use of “dry cells” to keep inmates from bringing contraband into federal prisons.

CHILLIWACK — On Sunday afternoon (Aug. 28), at approximately 2:20pm, the Chilliwack Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 45000 block of Oliver Crescent.
Upon arrival on scene, firefighters observed heavy, black smoke and flames coming from an attached garage.

The move frees up a roster spot and potentially makes room for guard Jalen Harris, who was recently reinstated by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association after serving a one-year suspension for a positive drug test.
