Edmonton Oilers legend Kevin Lowe retires from team’s front office
EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers have announced that Kevin Lowe is retiring from his position in the team’s front office.
Lowe has spent more than 40 years with the Oilers, working most recently as the club’s vice chair and alternate governor. He will continue to be an ambassador for the team.

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have solidified their bullpen hours before the Major League Baseball trade deadline, acquiring relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop from the Miami Marlins for shortstop prospect Jordan Groshans.

Cooler weather could offer respite to crews battling wildfire near Penticton, B.C.
VANCOUVER — A wildfire burning in British Columbia’s southern Okanagan now covers nearly 28 square kilometres after hot weather fuelled explosive growth since it was sparked Friday.
About 300 properties, including the Apex Mountain resort southwest of Penticton, have been ordered evacuated as the fire showed aggressive and unpredictable growth, destroying an unoccupied cabin.
Residents of more than 400 other properties have been told to be ready to leave on short notice.

Fewer people buying pot from unlicensed shops last year than in 2018: B.C. study
VANCOUVER — A new study shows the number of consumers who turned to unlicensed stores to purchase cannabis has dropped by almost 40 per cent between 2018 and 2021.
The BC Stats study commissioned by the BC Cannabis Secretariat shows 17 per cent of the survey’s 25,000 participants reported buying pot from an unlicensed store last year, down from 56 per cent in 2018.

OTTAWA — The executive director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation is warning that unless action is taken to combat hate, including online, it will continue to spread like wildfire.

The woman who filed a lawsuit against Hockey Canada over an alleged group sexual assault recently passed a polygraph examination, her lawyer said Tuesday.

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom — Maya Laylor captured gold in the 76-kilogram class of women’s weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday.
