VANCOUVER — Canada’s emergency preparedness minister says Ottawa is providing $870 million to support recovery efforts after destructive flooding in British Columbia last fall.
Bill Blair says the money is the first payment as part of a commitment the federal government made in the immediate aftermath of the severe weather, with more to come.

MISSION —The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is investigating the death of a man in Mission.
Early Saturday morning (July 16), police responded to a report of a man pacing the northbound sidewalk on the Mission Bridge.
It is reported that the man had a weapon and climbed over the railing when an officer attempted to take him into custody. The man subsequently fell into the water below.

VANCOUVER — The trial for a former Canucks forward accused of sexual assault has begun in Vancouver.

ABBOTSFORD — Early Monday morning (July 18) at approximately 4:37 a.m., Abbotsford Police responded to shots fired within the 34700 block of Townshipline Road.En route to the call, one patrol vehicle was involved in a serious motor vehicle collision in the 3600 block of George Ferguson Way. Transportation Safety Board of Canada investigates fatal seaplane crash in Quebec
MONTREAL — The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating a seaplane crash in Quebec’s Mauricie region that killed a 63-year-old man.
Provincial police say they were called around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday after witnesses reported that a seaplane had plunged into the St-Maurice river, in Shawinigan, Que., about 150 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
Shawinigan resident René Martel was pulled from the plane and taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

Gusty winds forecast near Lytton, B.C., as wildfire remains out of control
LYTTON, B.C. — Showers are likely over the northern end of British Columbia’s Fraser Canyon, potentially aiding crews battling a 17-square kilometre wildfire just west of the village of Lytton.
But Environment Canada says any rain will also be accompanied by very blustery winds.
The weather office is calling for a 60 per cent chance of showers around Lytton and warns of the chance of thundershowers, while winds are expected to gust up to 70 km/h later in the day.

EUGENE, Ore. — Canadian sprint star Andre De Grasse has withdrawn from the 200 metres at the world track and field championships, the event in which he won Olympic gold last summer in Tokyo.
The 27-year-old from Markham, Ont., tested positive for COVID-19 less than a month ago, and told The Canadian Press that whether he would run the 200 in Eugene would be a “game-time decision.”The 200-metre heats were scheduled for Monday evening. Athletics Canada confirmed his withdrawal.

OTTAWA — Pat King, an organizer of the “Freedom Convoy” that paralyzed downtown Ottawa for three weeks last winter, has been granted bail.
The decision was delivered in an Ottawa courtroom Monday by Superior Court Justice Anne London-Weinstein.

GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) — Three people were fatally shot and two were injured Sunday evening at an Indiana mall after a man with a rifle opened fire in a food court and an armed civilian shot and killed him, police said.
