• Theatre review: The Children shakes up the Centaur with a very English apocalypse

If it weren’t for the descriptions of the sea boiling like milk and of the “filthy glitter” of radioactive fallout in the air, Lucy Kirkwood’s 2016 play The Children (playing at the Centaur to Nov. 25) might put you in mind of the kind of British telly drama best watched wearing a comfy cardigan and slippers while sipping a hot cocoa.
At the heart of it is a 60-something couple whiling away their retirement in a cottage somewhere on the English coast. Enter a face from th

Thousands of Montrealers of all ages, origins and walks of life packed the four sides of Place du Canada on Sunday morning as cannons sounded a 21-gun salute in a solemn ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War.
Tears ran down Ronald Gagnon’s cheeks as he reflected on the significance of Remembrance Day for his own family and all Canadians.

  • Jack Todd: Change is fast and fluid in today's NHL

The weekend had an elegiac feel. The leaves mostly gone, Sunday devoted to honouring those who fell and those who served in our collective wars — including my father, who was on the Western Front in France when the guns fell silent 100 years ago.
The return of former captain Max Pacioretty and the Canadiens’ decision to release Tomas Plekanec marked the end of an era, with two of the central figures in the 21st-century history of the CH now gone the way of Andrei Markov, P.K. Subban,

  • Schukov: A new perspective on daylight savings time

“Spring forward, fall back” . . . what the time traveller said in H.G. Well’s The Time Machine, before he pulled the lever.
    Since there appears to be much ado about the seasonal resetting off clocks in order to save daylight, I propose a new system I call Rest and Recreation Saving Period (RRSP for short; I hope that acronym is not already taken.) It works as follows;
When you get home from work, set the clock back four hours; this allows you at least eight hours to pamper

Many motorists were caught off guard by the snowstorm that afflicted much of Quebec on Saturday, if an investigation by CAA-Québec is to be believed.
According to the organization, one in four vehicles is still ill-prepared for winter weather.
CAA-Québec did not conduct an exhaustive survey, but it did examine the tires of 200 vehicles in the Quebec region last Thursday.
Of the vehicles it studied, 18 per cent still had summer tires and six per cent had tires that were too worn to

  • Fitness: Is a solid sleep helped or hindered by an evening workout?

Sleep. It’s a precious commodity, and one of the pillars of health and wellness. But for about one-third of Canadians, sleep doesn’t come easily, which makes everyday tasks, including exercise, that much harder to enjoy.
Yet despite the seeming contradiction in using exercise to battle fatigue, working up a sweat is often suggested as a first line of defence for those who have trouble sleeping. Several studies have shown that regular physical activity improves sleep habits, including

Alexander Kufta was two years old in 1918 when he contracted the Spanish flu from First World War soldiers returning home to Verdun from the battlefields of Europe.

  • Concert review: Jack White frenzied but focused at Laval's Place Bell

Much has been made of the supposed difficulty of Jack White’s latest solo album, Boarding House Reach, a bonkers genre-smash that’s as liberating as it is wilfully obscure. It defies fans to pin White down, and considering his famous refusal to follow a rigid set list, there was reason to fear the scattershot nature of his newest songs could bleed through to a messy, unfocused live show. But those fears short-change White the master showman, and the supremely attentive four-piece he

They say time heals all wounds, but the relationship between the Canadiens and former captain Max Pacioretty are still pretty fresh.
Pacioretty played his first game at the Bell Centre on Saturday night since being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sept. 10. Pacioretty insisted he never wanted to leave Montreal and Canadiens owner/president Geoff Molson and GM Marc Bergevin both said he asked for a trade.

The Canadiens played a horrible first period on home ice. Outshot 15-4 by Las Vegas and outscored 2-0.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the home team — riding their first two-game losing streak of the season — spent the first 20 minutes sucking hard.
If this were last season’s team, game over.
    Vegas would have romped.
