If it weren’t for the descriptions of the sea boiling like milk and of the “filthy glitter” of radioactive fallout in the air, Lucy Kirkwood’s 2016 play The Children (playing at the Centaur to Nov. 25) might put you in mind of the kind of British telly drama best watched wearing a comfy cardigan and slippers while sipping a hot cocoa.
At the heart of it is a 60-something couple whiling away their retirement in a cottage somewhere on the English coast. Enter a face from th

Remembrance Day: Solemn ceremony marks 100th anniversary of Armistice
Thousands of Montrealers of all ages, origins and walks of life packed the four sides of Place du Canada on Sunday morning as cannons sounded a 21-gun salute in a solemn ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War.
Tears ran down Ronald Gagnon’s cheeks as he reflected on the significance of Remembrance Day for his own family and all Canadians.
Gagnon, 71, who wore a series of bright medals and a scarlet poppy on his uniform, served with the Royal -
Jack Todd: Change is fast and fluid in today's NHL
The weekend had an elegiac feel. The leaves mostly gone, Sunday devoted to honouring those who fell and those who served in our collective wars — including my father, who was on the Western Front in France when the guns fell silent 100 years ago.
The return of former captain Max Pacioretty and the Canadiens’ decision to release Tomas Plekanec marked the end of an era, with two of the central figures in the 21st-century history of the CH now gone the way of Andrei Markov, P.K. Subban, -
Lewis Hamilton wins Brazilian GP, Montreal's Lance Stroll 18th
SAO PAULO — Lewis Hamilton won the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, helping his Mercedes team to take the constructors’ title.
Hamilton, who had already sealed his fifth Formula One title, started from pole position and finished less than two seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen completed the podium at Interlagos.
Hamilton’s 10th victory in the season was helped by Force India’s Esteban Ocon, who collided with Verstappen on the 4 -
Schukov: A new perspective on daylight savings time
“Spring forward, fall back” . . . what the time traveller said in H.G. Well’s The Time Machine, before he pulled the lever.
Since there appears to be much ado about the seasonal resetting off clocks in order to save daylight, I propose a new system I call Rest and Recreation Saving Period (RRSP for short; I hope that acronym is not already taken.) It works as follows;
When you get home from work, set the clock back four hours; this allows you at least eight hours to pamper -
One in four vehicles isn't ready for the snow: CAA-Québec
Many motorists were caught off guard by the snowstorm that afflicted much of Quebec on Saturday, if an investigation by CAA-Québec is to be believed.
According to the organization, one in four vehicles is still ill-prepared for winter weather.
CAA-Québec did not conduct an exhaustive survey, but it did examine the tires of 200 vehicles in the Quebec region last Thursday.
Of the vehicles it studied, 18 per cent still had summer tires and six per cent had tires that were too worn to -

Car flips over into hole in Montreal East
Firefighters rescued a driver after he flipped over his car into a construction hole in Montreal East while apparently fleeing the scene of an accident on Saturday night.
The 64-year-old man was driving east on Henri Bourassa Blvd. about 10 p.m. when he hit a truck stopped at the corner of Rodolphe-Forget Blvd.
He then accelerated, fleeing the scene, but drove into a hole on a construction site and flipped over, said SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils.

Strong winds cause power outages across Quebec
More than 18,000 Hydro-Québec customers will still without power at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning after strong winds hit several of the province’s regions.
The Bas-Saint-Laurent, Côte-Nord, Chaudière-Appalaches, Montérégie and Lanaudière were the most affected areas.
Winds gusting to 100 km/h in some places caused tree branches to fall on electric wires.
Multiple Hydro-Québec teams were deployed to restore power.

Bombardier layoffs: Monday meeting to address fallout in Quebec
Pierre Fitzgibbon, Quebec’s economy minister, is due to meet with representatives from Bombardier, its unions and other aerospace companies on Monday as he takes stock of the company’s announcement that 2,500 jobs will be slashed in Quebec.
Premier François Legault said on Thursday that his government wanted to minimize the number of jobs lost and would try to find jobs for laid-off workers at other companies.
Fitzgibbon said on Thursday he had spoken to the CEOs of the t -
Fitness: Is a solid sleep helped or hindered by an evening workout?
Sleep. It’s a precious commodity, and one of the pillars of health and wellness. But for about one-third of Canadians, sleep doesn’t come easily, which makes everyday tasks, including exercise, that much harder to enjoy.
Yet despite the seeming contradiction in using exercise to battle fatigue, working up a sweat is often suggested as a first line of defence for those who have trouble sleeping. Several studies have shown that regular physical activity improves sleep habits, including -
Unpretentious Laurentians home hides a delightful, cosy inside
When viewed from the front, this house, which was built in the 1970s near the village of St-Sauveur in the Laurentians, looks like any other cute little chalet. But its unpretentious colourful façade hides a delightful and cosy home interior full of old furnishings, art objects and other beautiful creations by lady of the house Gillian Lee, a master quilt maker.
Mature apple trees growing on the 1,860-square-metre (20,000 square foot) lot on which the house sits provide intimacy for Lee a -
While you were sleeping: France seizes jet after airline doesn't pay bill
Here’s what happened as the cold settled in.
The Laval Rouge et Or stymied Montreal Carabins 14-1 on Saturday en route to capturing the Dunsmore Cup. David Coté hit a 14-yard field goal to open the scoring for Laval, who also forced two safeties and picked off Montreal quarterback Dimitri Morand three times. Regis Cibasu led the way for Montreal with 10 catches and 110 yards receiving. The Carabins’ lone point came on a rouge in the second quarter.

Turcotgeddon: The long traffic nightmare continues Sunday with another day to go
It appears Montrealers are heeding the warnings about the worse-than-usual road closings in the city this weekend as traffic was light on Saturday. Here are areas to avoid today.
Turcot Interchange:
The access for Highway 20 West from the Ville Marie will be closed until Tuesday at 5 a.m.
The Ville-Marie access from Highway 20 E. will be closed until Tuesday at 5 a.m.
Highway 15 North will be closed from the entrance off the Champlain Bridge to the Décarie Expressway until Monday at -
Montreal weather: Lots of sun for a change, but at a price
The day will dawn brightly, but it will be quite chilly.
A west wind at 20 km/h, gusting to 40, will bring a wind chill of minus 9 in the morning.
Environment Canada is calling for a high of zero.
Tonight: Clear, then increasing cloudiness near midnight with a 40-per-cent chance of flurries and a low of minus 3.

A wee wooden rocking horse linked veteran to both world wars
Alexander Kufta was two years old in 1918 when he contracted the Spanish flu from First World War soldiers returning home to Verdun from the battlefields of Europe.
The Spanish flu infected 500 million people worldwide, from 1918 to 1920, killing between three and five per cent of the world’s population.
Kufta’s parents were told their son would die and to make him as comfortable as possible. So his father built him a diminutive wooden rocking horse and tucked him into it.

Concert review: Jack White frenzied but focused at Laval's Place Bell
Much has been made of the supposed difficulty of Jack White’s latest solo album, Boarding House Reach, a bonkers genre-smash that’s as liberating as it is wilfully obscure. It defies fans to pin White down, and considering his famous refusal to follow a rigid set list, there was reason to fear the scattershot nature of his newest songs could bleed through to a messy, unfocused live show. But those fears short-change White the master showman, and the supremely attentive four-piece he -
Stu Cowan: Wound is still fresh for Max Pacioretty and the Canadiens
They say time heals all wounds, but the relationship between the Canadiens and former captain Max Pacioretty are still pretty fresh.
Pacioretty played his first game at the Bell Centre on Saturday night since being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sept. 10. Pacioretty insisted he never wanted to leave Montreal and Canadiens owner/president Geoff Molson and GM Marc Bergevin both said he asked for a trade.
It got ugly.
No matter who said what, the reality is the Canadiens didn’t want Pa -
In the Habs' Room: 'It's always nice when you beat your old team,' Tatar crows after scoring winner
Tomas Tatar wasn’t in Las Vegas long enough to forge any strong bonds, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t take extra satisfaction in the Canadiens’ 5-4 win over the Golden Knights on Saturday at the Bell Centre.
“It’s always nice when you beat your old team,” said Tatar, who provided the winning goal at 12:17 of the third period.
The Golden Knights acquired Tatar at the trading deadline last season, but he had difficulty finding ice on an established lineup -
Update: Suspect appears in court after boy, man shot Friday
A 36-year-old man appeared Saturday at the Montreal courthouse to face various charges, including at least one for attempted murder.
The identity of the accused can not be disclosed to protect the child.
A 5-year-old boy and a 69-year-old man were wounded Friday night by gunshots at a Kirkland residence.
Police had responded to several 911 calls around 7 p.m. concerning a man in distress in a house near Ste-Marie Rd. and Montrose Dr., which is on the border between Beaconsfield and Kirkland.

Canadiens Game Day: Habs refuse to give up and beat Golden Knights 5-4
Canadiens Game Day is a new feature this season in which we will follow the Habs during every home game from the morning skate in Brossard through the post-game interviews at the Bell Centre, updating throughout the day with all the news, notes, quotes and opinion you’re looking for:
The first period of Saturday night’s game between the Canadiens and Vegas Golden Knights at the Bell Centre must have resulted in some bad flashbacks to last season for Montreal fans.

About last night … Canadiens rally to take Vegas 5-4
This team …
The Canadiens played a horrible first period on home ice. Outshot 15-4 by Las Vegas and outscored 2-0.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the home team — riding their first two-game losing streak of the season — spent the first 20 minutes sucking hard.
If this were last season’s team, game over.
Vegas would have romped.
Max Pacioretty would have bagged a hat trick. Marc-André Fleury would have pitched a shutout. Ryan Reaves would have pounded the stuff -
Canadiens put on a lively show to edge flashy Vegas Golden Knights
It’s not always pretty, but it is entertaining when the Canadiens win a game this season.
Their seesaw battle against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night was a perfect example as the Montreal came from behind on two occasions to post a 5-4 victory.
Tomas Tatar provided the winning margin when scored from close range at 12:17 of the third period. It was his seventh goal of the season and his fourth in three games.
Andrew Shaw scored two goals, including a tying goal at 9:20 of the th -

Sloppy but fun.
Tomas Tatar played a brilliant game against his former team and scored the winner, 12 minutes into the third period of a crazy, back-and-forth game
A fluky goal, in off Matthew Peca, put Vegas ahead on a power play, 3:27 into the third period. Six minutes later, Andrew Shaw tipped one past Marc-André Fleury to tie it.

Liveblog: Canadiens 3 – Vegas 3 after two
Should be a dandy third.
Poor D by Jordie Benn resulted in Alex Tuch’s goal late in the second period to break the home team’s momentum and tie the game.
The Canadiens came alive with two goals in 65 seconds, six minutes into the second period. After Charles Hudon got the home team on the board, Andrew Shaw’s tap-in tied it up at 2-2.
Three minutes later, brilliant work by Artturi Lehkonen fed Jesperi Kotkaniemi for the go-ahead goal.
