When it comes to NHL players, Steve Bégin was as tough as they come. But on Thursday morning, the former Canadien was having a hard time holding back his tears.
The reason: he finally received his high school graduation diploma at age 40.
“I was a little emotional,” Bégin said following the official presentation from Quebec Minister of Education Jean-François Roberge at the Bell Centre’s Restaurant 9-4-10. “I’m always like this. There&

Montreal property taxes are going up next year, though not by as much as last time.
Most businesses will see a drop in taxes thanks to a change in how non-residential building owners are charged.
And more money is being poured into repairs to roads and water infrastructure.
“This budget will make a difference in the lives of our citizens today and for the generations to come,” Mayor Valérie Plante said as she unveiled Montreal’s $5.7-billion budget for 2019 on Thurs -

Update: We’ll help laid off Bombardier workers find jobs, Legault says
QUEBEC — News that Bombardier is slashing 5,000 jobs — including 2,500 in Quebec — as part of a restructuring plan landed with a thud Thursday, sparking anger from workers and calls for action by opposition politicians.
Arriving for a meeting with Saguenay Mayor Josée Néron, Quebec Premier François Legault said he has spoken to both the president of Bombardier and the head of the union.
“It’s a sad day but I assured both we will do everything po -
N.D.G. woman to be charged in theft from Montreal Canadiens' group
A 27-year-old Notre-Dame-de-Grâce resident is scheduled to make her first appearance at the Montreal courthouse next week on a charge alleging she stole a large sum of money from the company that owns the Montreal Canadiens.
The accused, who does not have a criminal record, is alleged to have stolen “more than $5,000” from l’Aréna des Canadiens on April 8, the day after the Canadiens finished their regular season at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto against the Mapl -
Nunavik crisis: 124 people have died by suicide since 2010
At least 124 people in Nunavik have taken their lives in the past nine years.
The latest numbers on northern suicide, provided by the Quebec coroner, point to a longstanding crisis that appears to be getting worse.
The region went from having 13 suicide deaths per year, in 2015, to 16 the following year and 22 in 2017.
Roughly one in 100 people in Quebec’s North are taking their own lives — a statistic that doesn’t include suicide attempts or self-harming behaviour.

Social Notes: Costumed for CURE Foundation fundraiser
Ever since childhood, I’ve had a major thing for dressing up, which naturally leads to a predilection for Halloween. So you can imagine the annual exhilaration when all that costume charisma is harnessed by esteemed evenings like the inaugural Costumes for CURE Icon Event at Espace 3550, benefiting the CURE Foundation’s fight against breast cancer. For your dressed-up, glammed-up pleasure, voilà — the reveal of this new dazzler on the masked fall lineup. The -
The Great War as it really looked: colour photos bring past to life
Memorizing In Flanders Fields as a student, and keeping that memory alive into adulthood, is one thing; knowing that the Montreal Canadiens’ unofficial motto (“To you from failing hands we throw the torch …”) is from John McRae’s iconic poem will get you bonus points. Wearing a poppy pin for a couple of weeks every November can only be good. But at a time when technology and social media have us all living in a perpetual present tense, a little more is needed to ke -
Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed: It's time to install those winter tires
It’s a four-letter word that makes many people cringe. With the trees shedding their leaves, pumpkin-spice everything at your local coffee shop and the cooler weather settling in, it’s only a matter of time before the snow hits. According to meteorologists’ reports, the snow is supposed to begin as of next week, and there is no telling how many snowstorms we may see between now and Dec. 15, the deadline for the installation of winter tires.

Opinion: Canadian veterans' homelessness is solvable
Every November, poppies appear on lapels across the city as we remember the men and women of the Canadian military killed in conflicts around the world, as well as those who have served and continue to serve. Of those fortunate enough to return to civilian life, some transitioned with ease, and others with difficulty.
Among those who struggled include veterans who have ended up on the street. We don’t think we need to underscore just how unacceptable it is that those who were ready to lay -
Update: Bombardier employees frustrated by lack of information on layoffs
QUEBEC — News that Bombardier is slashing 5,000 jobs — including 2,500 in Quebec — as part of a restructuring plan landed with a thud Thursday, sparking anger from workers and calls for action by opposition politicians.
The head of the Unifor union representing 1,900 workers at the Bombardier completion centre in Montreal — where they work on the Global series of planes — says the layoffs represent a worrisome sign for the overall outlook of the aircraft industry.

The changes represent a 2.2-per-cent increase in service over 2018, the STM says.

Montreal budget: More than 22,800 small businesses to get a tax break
Small businesses will get a break this year, the city of Montreal said as it introduced a progressive property tax system for non-residential properties that will effectively reduce rates on non-residential properties with evaluations below $3 million.
The new system, introduced in the municipal budget on Thursday, will reduce property taxes on the first $500,000 of a building’s evaluation by an average of 9.9 per cent.
This will reduce property taxes for just over 22,800 small busine -
