A shrill wind gusted down McGill College Ave. at the start of the lunch hour Tuesday, sending the usual throngs of pedestrians scurrying for cover.
It was a rather inhospitable moment to be collecting the input of Montrealers on the future of this showpiece boulevard, but representatives of the Office de consultation publique de Montréal gamely battled the elements to proceed with the three days of input-seeking activities.
It was a bit chilly for the portable sandbox set up to get partic

Montreal awaits audit of radicalization prevention centre
The city of Montreal and the Quebec government have requested an audit of a Montreal-based centre for the prevention of radicalization, Mayor Valérie Plante revealed Tuesday.
“The message I’m sending this morning is that we are not questioning the mission, but for sure, we want to make certain that the money is being well spent,” Plante said.
The mayor added that her prime concern is that while Montreal is currently the only source of funding for the Centre for the -
City awaiting audit of radicalization prevention centre: Mayor Plante
The city of Montreal and the Quebec government have requested an audit of a Montreal-based centre for the prevention of radicalization, Mayor Valérie Plante revealed Tuesday.
“The message I’m sending this morning is that we are not questioning the mission, but for sure, we want to make certain that the money is being well spent,” Plante said.
The mayor added that her prime concern is that while Montreal is currently providing all the funding, the centre’s mand -
Canadiens Notebook: Jacob de la Rose placed on waivers
The Canadiens placed Jacob de la Rose on NHL waivers at noon Tuesday.
Now it will be interesting to see if another NHL team claims the 6-foot-3, 216-pound forward over the next 24 hours.
De la Rose has yet to play a game this season after suffering a “cardiac episode” after the Canadiens’ final pre-season game in Ottawa. De la Rose had resumed practising with the Canadiens, but wasn’t on the ice for Tuesday’s practice in Brossard ahead of the announcement he has bee -
SQDC: First cannabis stores stocked, poised for grand opening Wednesday
The Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) offered members of the media a sneak peak at one of its 12 outlets Tuesday morning.
Beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, customers over the age of 18 will be able to walk into any store and choose from approximately 110 cannabis products. That number is expected to rise to 180 as the organization gets up to speed in the coming weeks.
Clients will also be able to order online, where they will be asked their age on the SQDC website, -
Sexual predator who stalked women on Montreal transit may have other victims
The sexual crimes unit of the Montreal police department has turned to the public in an effort to locate potential victims of 23-year-old Kevins Monette-Décosse who has already pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual assault after being arrested on Aug. 31.
Between May and August of 2018, Monette-Décosse sexually assaulted six women, all of the attacks occurring on the métro or on city buses. However investigators say they have good reason to believe there were other victims -
New course trains future municipal public safety officers
A new municipal patrol training program is being offered at CÉGEP Gérald-Godin in Ste-Geneviève.
The new urban safety intervention program will begin in November.
The eight-month course, which leads to an attestation d’études collégiales (AEC), is aimed at training future municipal public safety officers.
Alain Dupuis, supervisor of the Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue Municipal Patrol, has been working on the project for several years. Municipal Patrol Officers -
74 CAQ MNAs to be sworn into office as party slowly takes control
QUEBEC — Tuesday is a big day for the Coalition Avenir Québec.
Two weeks after sweeping the province in a general election, the 74 newly elected men and women are to be sworn in as MNAs.
The ceremony will unfold at about 2 p.m. in the legislature. The individuals swear an oath to the Quebec people and Queen Elizabeth.
It is to be followed by a speech by Premier-designate François Legault, who will note it is the first time in 50 years that Quebecers are getting a government t -
Opinion: Quebec shouldn't raise age limit for cannabis
I need someone to explain why Quebec is taking a hard stance on marijuana.
Why are we raising the age limit on this stuff when anyone older than 14 already knows where to get it anyway? Why make the softest drug imaginable unavailable to the very generation that is most curious and uninformed about drugs? Why make it harder to get now that we finally have the right to know what we’re getting and where it came from? Why does our incoming premier want to send young people back into the stree -
Opinion: Quebec should do all it can to resist onslaught of cannabis
A devastating social hurricane is approaching Quebec and every community, from our southern cities to our northerly towns, is in its path. Legalizing recreational marijuana fundamentally changes our country for the worse. Big Marijuana is replacing Big Tobacco, and wants your family members and co-workers as lifelong customers.
This is all thanks to our federal government, which saw fit to open the way for a massive pot industry and seems unwilling or unable to control the smoky genie emerg -
Cannabis cats and dogs: Mandarin likes CBD and she's not the only pet
“I felt like I was being a deviant parent,” says Heather Johnson, recalling the time she first added CBD or cannabidiol oil — a compound found in the cannabis plant — to her cat Mandarin’s treats.
Mandarin, a rescue cat, licks her forelegs when she gets anxious. That tends to happen when Johnson leaves town, or when she has house guests. Two years ago, the licking got so bad that Mandarin developed bald spots. When changing the cat’s diet didn’t help, Jo -
Nearly 4,700 still without power in Montreal as high winds buffet Quebec
More than a few Montreal area residents woke up Tuesday morning to discover that some of their Halloween decorations — and perhaps, parts of their trees — were gone with wind.
High winds overnight are being blamed for a series of power failures and damage across the province.
As of 10 a.m., 74,000 Hydro-Québec clients — a designation that covers households and businesses — were without electricity, nearly 4,700 of them in the Montreal area and 7,800 in the Laurenti -

“Could you hold on a minute please,” he said. “It’s a patient calling.”
Back in interview mode, he explained that the 93-year-old caller had a question about her ride to an appointment in the days to come. Evers has been driving cancer pat -
Fire razes residential block in downtown Magog
A major fire destroyed a residential block in downtown Magog early Tuesday.
The blaze broke out at about 3:30 a.m. on Principale St. and the flames were fanned by high winds that swept the region overnight. Firefighters were still extinguishing the remnants of the fire four hours after it broke out.
There were no injuries reported.
The downtown area remains without power and has been blocked off to traffic. The Red Cross is on site and a temporary shelter has been erected to house those dis -
West Island Wise Women events aim to 'break out of their comfort zone'
A new series of wellness workshops in the West Island aims to empower women to rediscover what they want and need in their lives, by finding balance between care-giving responsibilities, whether for children or other family members, and their own dreams and ambitions.
Psychotherapist Lisa Brookman began offering the workshops under the Wise Women Academy banner this past spring as an offshoot of her popular Wise Women Canada blog, which she co-founded five years ago with best friend Liz Weiner. -
Have you seen this man? Laval police seek attempted-murder suspect
Laval police have turned to the public in an effort to track down 28-year-old Levon Mirzoian, who is wanted in connection with a murder attempt in their city last August.
Police suspect Mirzoian was involved in a shooting last Aug. 31 that took place at about 5 p.m. at a residence under renovation on Bruno St. in Laval’s Chomedey district. The 32-year-old victim survived his wounds, however police add his children were also the target of death threats made during the incident.

While you were sleeping: Earth, wind, fire and Trump's 'creepy' tweets
A few things you might have missed while you were sleeping.

The intense downtown fire started around 4:30 a.m. and before dawn local firefighters were joined by their peers from Sherbrooke, Orford, Eastman, Ayer’s Cliff and Austin, according to media reports. Their task was made more difficult by high winds. The building housed businesses and apartments, but no injuries were report -

Open house event highlights services for seniors in St-Lazare
When Carole Marcoux first retired, she went looking for activities to keep her body and brain active. But the St-Lazare resident was disappointed to find the town’s services for seniors didn’t reflect her wants and needs.
As an active, younger senior, Marcoux wasn’t interested in card games or line dancing. She wanted to find activities she was passionate about, challenging exercises to keep fit, and stimulating conversation to keep her mind sharp.
So when she saw in the town&r -

Protest planned against 'insulting' McGill Redmen name
Sports teams using Indigenous names and imagery is nothing new. See the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians and Edmonton Eskimos, to name a few. But there is one outstanding example, closer to home.
The McGill Redmen name has got to go, according to Tomas Jirousek, who says the term is offensive to Indigenous people.
“It’s quite insulting,” the rowing team member said of the name for McGill’s 28 men’s sports teams, which has been in use since the 1920s. “It -
Pace of housing price increases slows slightly in Montreal: Royal LePage survey

Accessibility problems still not fixed at MUHC superhospital: report
More than a year after an independent report found numerous problems with accessibility for the disabled and other patients at the MUHC superhospital, the McGill University Health Centre has still not fixed most of the deficiencies, the Montreal Gazette has learned.
The MUHC commissioned the report by two experts at the Université de Montréal after the patients’ committee raised repeated concerns about the lack of clear signage, the scarcity of wheelchairs in the lobby, the c -
Big walking weekend in Pincourt and St-Lazare
It’s time for a walk.
It’s no secret that exercise is good for both mental and physical health and walking is the type of inexpensive activity people can take at their own pace and on their own schedule.
The Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ) with Le Grand défi Pierre Lavoie are encouraging citizens to slip into walking shoes and hit the path, Oct. 20 and 21.
Inspired by the invitation, various municipalities have organized thei -
In the Habs' Room: Tomas Plekanec downplays historic 1,000th game
Tomas Plekanec had one thought while the Bell Centre crowd was giving him an ovation to prior to his 1,000th NHL game.
“I just wanted it to be as fast as possible and play the game,” Plekanec said after the Canadiens crushed the Detroit Red Wings 7-3 Monday night.
“I don’t show much emotion,” said Plekanec. “I know it’s an accomplishment and, as I’ve said before, when I’m done, I’ll look back and appreciate what I’ve done. Right n -
Accueil Bonneau celebrates 20 years after rebuilding
On June 9, 1998, an explosion caused by a gas leak tore through the building that houses Accueil Bonneau, an organization that provides help for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Three people were killed and more than 20 injured.
What followed was an outpouring of support from the private sector, the city of Montreal and the provincial government. Within four months, the Accueil Bonneau’s building had been rebuilt.
On Monday, some of the people who were there at -
Tatar, Drouin and Plekanec lead Canadiens to 7-3 rout of Red Wings
The season is still young, but Tomas Tatar is making Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin look good.
Tatar, who was part of the deal that sent Max Pacioretty to the Vegas Golden Knights, had a goal and two assists to help the Canadiens to a 7-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings Monday at the Bell Centre.
While Pacioretty scored at least 30 goals on five occasions, he seldom used his size to venture into the dirty areas in front of the net. That’s not a problem for the 5-foot-10 Tatar, who -

Let’s get real: this should be a -
