  • Linda Kay, a pioneer for female journalists and her students

    Linda Kay, a pioneering journalist who broke down gender barriers as one of the first female sports writers of her generation and and would later serve as the chair of Concordia University’s Department of Journalism and a columnist for the Montreal Gazette, has died. She was 66.
    She passed away on Friday, surrounded by family at the Glen site of the McGill University Health Centre. First diagnosed with cancer in 2016, the disease had gone into remission, but returned in March of this year.

  • Paper mill employee found dead in Quebec City

    The Quebec workers’ compensation board is investigating the death of a  56-year-old man Saturday morning at the White Birch paper mill in Quebec City.
    Quebec City police said preliminary findings indicate the death was not the result of a criminal act.
    A colleague who had stepped away for a few minutes found the victim  unconscious shortly after 6 a.m.
    Efforts by first responders to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful.

  • Motorcyclist hits deer, is killed by another vehicle near Drummondville

    A motorcyclist died Saturday night on northbound Highway 55, near Drummondville, 105 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
    The 54-year-old man reportedly hit a deer at about 9:45 p.m. and was thrown from his bike onto the highway, where he was hit and killed by another vehicle, which did not stop at the scene of the accident.
    Police traced the vehicle to Verdun. They will question the driver, and police experts will examine the vehicle. Charges could be laid, depending on the outcome

    Paul Byron scored the winning goal in a shootout to give the Canadiens a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.

  • Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime wins Tashkent Challenger

    Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime won the Tashkent Challenger tennis tournament on Saturday.
    The 18-year-old beat Kamil Majchrzak of Poland 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the US$75,000 event in the Uzbekistan capital, earning him $10,800. Auger-Aliassime had to win three qualifying matches and four in the main draw for the title.
    Ranked 128th in the world (22-year-old Majchrzak is 178th), Auger-Aliassime is now 2-1 in ATP Challenger-level finals this season.
