• Dunlevy: Post-SLAV and Kanata, let's talk about cultural appropriation

The dust may have settled on SLAV and Kanata, but there are still lessons to learn from the outcry surrounding Robert Lepage’s controversial stage productions that engulfed the Quebec cultural scene this past summer.
So hope the organizers of Cause or Consequence: Cultural Appropriation or Cultural Hegemony, a talk being held at Concordia University on Monday evening.
The discussion is an opportunity to continue the conversation, according to Rahul Varma, whose Teesri Duniya Theatre concei
  • Retailer plans to challenge Quebec cannabis law in court

Recreational cannabis will become legal on Wednesday, but for some local business owners, Quebec’s legalization plan — which will ban many products that are currently legal — is only a new form of prohibition.
Now, the owner of a Laval-based chain of head shops says he’s planning to go to court to fight the Quebec cannabis law.
Bill 157 establishes the framework for legal cannabis sales in Quebec, but one section of that law will make it illegal for businesses to sel

About 25 protesters turned out on a damp Saturday to denounce plans to once again close the Jacques-Cartier Bridge bike path during the winter, the only conduit into Montreal for cyclists living in Longueuil. Roughly 4,000 cyclists a day use the route in the summer months.
“What we are asking for is conditional closures — that the bridge corporation close the bike path when they find it is too icy or slippery, and then reopen it again once the surface is dry thanks to snow-clearing o

In June 2004, I attended a big party in Ottawa.
The 100th-anniversary celebration of the Canadian Women’s Press Club sent me on a trip back in time.
For years I’d been curious about my female predecessors in the field, who, until recent decades, had been erased from journalism history. I had no idea that women were first hired as journalists in C

There was more reason for concern on Saturday when Price wasn’t on the ice again for the Canadiens’ optional skate in Brossard with the team announcing he has a virus. Goalie Charlie Lindgren was called up from the AHL’s Laval Rocket on an emergency basis. Price is coming off the worst season of his c
  • Karl Lohnes: In decorating circles, everything old is on-trend again

They say that everything that goes around comes back around again, and I am certainly a believer of that when it comes to home décor and its trends. I’ve seen the return of velvet-flocked wallpaper, shag carpet and brass lighting in my lifetime. Usually, a trend that was traditional is re-invented as modern or vice versa. For instance, velvet wallpaper was originally used in very traditional 1970s homes and it re-appeared back on the decorating scene a few years ago in a hip, modern

She freely admits she knew “nothing at all about Montreal” and thought it was probably a “typical North American city” — not nearly as interesting as a city in Europe, an area of the world that she loves.

Justin Trudeau doesn’t like François Legault’s age limit for pot. In Armenia on Saturday, Trudeau said the Quebec government’s plan to set the legal age for smoking cannabis at 21 could leave an opening for organized crime. He said he hopes to discuss the matter further with Legault. Federal law sets the age at 18 or 19, depending on the province. Cannabis becomes legal for recreational use on Oct. 17.
