  • Crucifix will stay in Quebec's National Assembly, CAQ says

QUEBEC — The incoming Coalition Avenir Quebec government says it has no intention of removing the crucifix that hangs behind the Speaker’s chair in the legislature.
Simon Jolin-Barrette, a spokesman for the transition team, said Tuesday there is no contradiction between the new government’s plan to impose strict secularism rules on certain public servants and its desire to maintain the crucifix.
“The historic position of the CAQ is to keep the crucifix in its current posi

  • Geoff Molson says time had come to change the Canadiens' philosophy

What a difference a couple of games make.
When Montreal Canadiens president, CEO and owner Geoff Molson said in an interview in early July that he was excited about where his team was going, many fans found it hard to believe. The Habs had just finished 28th out of 31 teams in the National Hockey League and there seemed to be few reasons to believe the squad had improved notably since that disastrous season.
But here was Molson Tuesday morning at the Bell Centre again saying he was excited about

  • Teachers who already wear religious garb could sidestep ban, CAQ suggests

QUEBEC — The Coalition Avenir Québec is not backing down on its plans to bar authority figures like judges and police officers from wearing religious symbols.
But for the first time it has floated the idea that teachers might be allowed to keep their garb because the government could consider those acquired rights.
That would mean the strict new rules would only apply to new hires, suggested Simon Jolin-Barrette, who acts as the incoming government spokesperson.

  • Allison Hanes: Why is Quebec debating values again?

Like many Quebecers, I feel deeply unsettled by the ratcheting up of identity politics in the aftermath of last week’s election.
The newly elected Coalition Avenir Québec government doesn’t just want to reduce immigration and expel newcomers who fail language or values tests, they also plan to outlaw religious garb for teachers, judges and police officers and override any charter challenges by invoking the notwithstanding clause.

Mike Reilly is in the right place at the right time.
The 25-year-old defenceman has been one of the surprises in what has been a surprising start for the Montreal Canadiens.
Reilly has averaged nearly 22 minutes — only Jeff Petry has been on the ice longer — and has been a perfect fit in a system which stresses speed and skating. The Canadiens used their speed to earn a point in a 3-2 overtime loss to Toronto and then skated to a 5-1 win in Pittsburgh.

  • Stu Cowan: Alouettes officially eliminated from CFL playoff contention

There are some things about the Canadian Football League that are hard to explain, like why a team gets a point for missing a field goal, why referees feel compelled to throw a penalty flag on what seems like every second play, and why the Calgary Stampeders struggle to win games in Montreal.
Coming into Monday afternoon’s Thanksgiving Day game, the Stampeders hadn’t beaten the Alouettes at Molson Stadium since 2013.
Heading into the fourth quarter Monday, it looked like that streak
