Jesperi Kotkaniemi received some good news when he showed up at the Montreal Canadiens’ practice facility in Brossard on Saturday morning.
Coach Claude Julien told him he would be part of the Habs’ lineup when the season opens Wednesday night in Toronto.
“This has been my dream since I was a little kid,” Kotkaniemi said. “I think they made this decision because I played good.”

Quebec election: If vote follows newest poll, CAQ forms first government
As Quebec’s election campaign draws to a close, a new poll indicates the province may be headed for its first ever Coalition Avenir Québec government on Monday, likely a minority.
François Legault’s CAQ were favoured by 32 per cent of voters, while Philippe Couillard’s ruling Liberals were at 30 per cent, according to the survey, published Saturday.
The two sovereignist parties, meanwhile, were in a dead heat: Jean-François Lisée’s Parti Q -

Montreal police are investigating after a 67-year-old man was shot multiple times in an alley on Saturday morning.
Police received calls about gunfire in an alley near Monk Blvd. and Springland St. at 9:45 a.m., said police spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron.
When police officers arrived on the scene they found a man who had been shot multiple times in the upper body. He was conscious and was rushed to a hospital, where he was listed as being in serious condition, Bergeron sa -

Quebec election: Legault urges people to vote, pledges to work with others
COMPTON — With only two days left to go before election night, François Legault is urging Quebecers to vote in “massive” numbers and pledging to work with other political parties if elected.
While campaigning in the Eastern Townships Saturday, the Coalition Avenir Québec leader returned to the same message he focused on in the early days of the campaign: the Liberals have been in power for too long and only the CAQ can unseat them.
“It’s not good for d -
Quebec election: Liberals are true nationalist party, Couillard says
ST-AUGUSTIN-DE-DESMAURES — Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard played the nationalist card Saturday as his campaign team criss-crossed the hotly contested Quebec City region, attacking what he called the “false promises” of François Legault.
“The Liberals talk of Quebec culture, we have a real plan for culture, a real plan to cut poverty — these are our propositions, that are credible, and have the financial means to back them up,” Couillard said at a ral -
Quebec election: Lisée rallies PQ troops despite bad-news opinion polls
TERREBONNE — With polls opening in less than 48 hours, it’s time for Jean-François Lisée to save the furniture.
The Parti Québécois leader basked in chants of “Lisée, Lisée, Lisée,” Saturday morning as he delivered a message that was more about the survival of his party than the dream of a PQ majority.
“Today, we’re launching something called Operation Convince,” Lisée said, to a crowd of PQ faithfu -
Watch: Sunday is your last chance to visit the old NFB building
The National Film Board’s massive drab building on Côte-de-Liesse hides a wealth of riches, much of which will be moving to a fancy, glassed-in Quartier des spectacles office building.
But before the move, they’re opening their doors to the public on Sunday.
This has been the headquarters of the National Film Board of Canada since 1956, when it moved from Ottawa, where it had been since the beginning in 1939. The NFB has been involved in nearly 14,000 productions, which have ga -
Intoxicated man run over, killed after police left him walking beside the road
Quebec’s independent police watchdog has launched an investigation after an intoxicated man who police had left walking by the side of a road died after being run over.
The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes said it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 52-year-old man in Louiseville, about 100 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
In a press release Saturday morning, the BEI said eight of its investigators have been assigned to the case.

Police to question three men after overnight shooting in St-Hubert
Longueuil police are questioning three men in their 20s after shots were fired in St-Hubert early Saturday morning.
Around 4:30 a.m., several residents of Grand Blvd. in the South Shore suburb called 911 after being awoken by the sound of gunshots, the Longueuil police department said. A car on Grand was hit by bullets.
The 911 callers described a vehicle fleeing the scene.
Police officers located the dark-coloured van on Route 116. Three young men were sitting in it. They were arrested and a ha -
Revenu Québec workers are on strike again this weekend
QUEBEC — Workers at Revenu Québec are on strike this weekend due to a deadlock in contract negotiations.
The employees involved include financial management officers, accountants, tax auditors and computer analysts.
According to the union, a strike on a weekend has a major impact since it is during this period that Revenu Québec workers perform checks at restaurants and bars. In addition, maintenance on the computer system is normally performed on weekends.

While you were sleeping: EpiPen advisory, tsunami in Indonesia, Vatican prayers
Here is a quick roundup of news from the overnight desk.
A warning, but no recall on faulty EpiPens: Health Canada is warning that some EpiPens may not slide out of their tubes easily, possibly delaying emergency treatment. The agency said early Saturday it was advised by Pfizer Canada about the issue, which it says affects some EpiPen and EpiPen Jr auto-injector devices. Health Canada warns that the problem could delay or prevent emergency treatment, possibly leading to patient disability or ev -

Secret Montreal: tarantulas, Dumpster diving and ghost-hunting
Where are you going to learn the ins and outs of Dumpster diving — maybe more the outs than ins in this case? Or where the city’s ghosts congregate? Or where to bop to the K-Pop beat? Or where to find the tarantula of your dreams? Fret not. These questions, and many others dealing with the more quirky aspects of Montreal’s underbelly, will be answ -
Shelter: Bright colours bring tropical touch to downtown apartment
At one time, Lee Hennessy thought she’d never be able to settle back in Montreal. She grew up in the city, but she’d spent more than 40 years living and working in Florida and the Cayman Islands. On the brief occasions when she returned to visit her family, she found the winters “absolutely numbing.”
A couple of years ago, she had a change of heart. Her career as a real estate broker was coming to an end and Hennessy figured it was time to retire. She looked at possible p -
Quebec election: The quiet resolve of Philippe Couillard
It’s Day 17 of the campaign and Philippe Couillard is standing in front of Laval’s Cité de la Santé in his trademark blue suit and an open-necked shirt.
Another day, another promise.
Today’s is on reduced prices for parking at hospitals across Quebec.
The high cost of visiting a hospital is a sore point, and the Liberal leader is hoping the measure will help his campaign gain traction.

Quebec election: CAQ could win a minority, new Léger poll indicates
A new poll published Saturday indicates the Coalition Avenir Québec has a slight advantage over the Quebec Liberal Party.
The Léger poll, for the Journal de Montréal, says 32 per cent of the 1,502 people polled said they intended to vote for the CAQ compared to 30 per cent for the Liberals.
The poll found that the Parti québécois followed with 19 per cent and Québec solidaire with 17 per cent.
Based on these results, Léger says a CAQ minority -
Josh Freed: Reflections on an election campaign nobody is talking about
The polls are over, the debates are done and it’s time to pick your premier.
But while you reflect on that, here are my own election reflections — no matter who wins.
REFLECTION 1: I’ve gone out with several groups of people this week and no one’s talking about Quebec’s election. They’re all talking about one thing: KAVANAUUUUGGGHHHHH.

Karl Lohnes: Shower your bathroom with the latest looks
The bathroom is one of the most used rooms in a house. Not only should it be functional, but also aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. On average, bathrooms are renovated every 15 years, so design and plan your needs for that time period. For instance, a young, new homeowner might want a walk-in shower with rain-shower heads and a television in the room; those in their retirement years may opt for a soaker tub with grab bars and built-in ceiling speakers for soft music. As for style, look for -
Editorial: Philippe Couillard's Liberals have earned a new mandate
The Couillard Liberals won the last election promising to focus on “les vraies affaires,” and that is what they have done. Their priority at the start of their mandate in 2014 was to put the province’s economic house in order. Now, the economy is booming. Unemployment is low. Quebec is an attractive place to live and work. Gone are the much darker days when confidence in the future was sorely tested.
There is no doubt that the government’s budgetary belt-tightening early -

Quebec election: Some Côte-St-Luc Jewish residents irked they couldn't vote in advance polling
Some Côte-St-Luc residents who are observant Jews are upset that they won’t be able to vote in this year’s provincial election not only because Monday is a Jewish holiday but they’ve also been unable to cast ballots at advance polling stations amid widespread computer glitches.
One voter told the Montreal Gazette that when he complained to a representative of Elections Quebec, he was told, “Oh, you Jews and your holidays.”

Stu Cowan: Finnish Connection could be key for Habs this season
The Canadiens’ Artturi Lehkonen is enjoying being able to speak Finnish again.
When Lehkonen broke into the NHL two seasons ago, he was the only Finn on the Canadiens. For the two seasons before that, Lehkonen was the only Finn on his Frolunda HC team in the Swedish Hockey League.
Now, Lehkonen is one of four Finnish players in the Canadiens’ locker room at training camp along with goalie Antti Niemi and fellow forwards Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Joel Armia.

Quebec election: PQ would "unite" parties in minority government
With three days left in the campaign, the Parti Québécois’s chances of forming a government are somewhere between slim and none.
At least, that’s what the latest polls say. The PQ sits 14 points behind the front-running Coalition Avenir Québec, according to a poll released Friday.
Asked repeatedly about his impending defeat, Jean-François Lisée insisted his party can pull off an upset.

But what about their everyday lives? Summer or fall? Dogs or cats? And the biggie: cheddar or Brie?
