As the Parti Québécois presented its “Made in Quebec” economic policy Monday, party leader Jean-François Lisée again faced questions about embattled Mercier candidate Michelle Blanc.
On Sunday, Blanc turned down an invitation to serve as an honorary co-president of an annual gala held by Équipe Montréal, an LGBTQ sports organization.
The group distanced itself from Blanc because of online comments she made about Hasidic Jews, b

Stu Cowan: Canadiens stock roster with former first-round draft picks
Brendan Gallagher, Paul Byron and Max Domi were sitting side-by-side in the Canadiens’ locker room after Monday morning’s practice in Brossard when I asked them a question: Do you know how many former first-round draft picks are on the team’s training-camp roster?
“No,” Gallagher said, shaking his head.
Byron thought about the question for few seconds before saying: “I don’t know … 10?”
When told the correct answer is 13, Domi responded -
QB Johnny Manziel to get start when Alouettes visit Winnipeg
When Johnny Manziel was intercepted four times against Hamilton early last month in his Alouettes debut, he remained the starting quarterback — perhaps because the team didn’t know whether any better options existed.
But after Antonio Pipkin was intercepted four times against British Columbia last Friday in his fourth game as the starter, he won’t receive the same immunity.
The Als returned to practice Monday morning, and it became apparent almost from the outset that managemen -
Quebec election: Stream the first televised English leaders' debate here
The day is finally upon us.
The first-ever televised English-language debate between the leaders of Quebec’s major parties starts at 5:30 p.m.
Organized by a consortium of Montreal English media outlets, you can watch the debate farther up this page or by clicking on this link.
A team of reporters and producers from the partners in the English media consortium will be fact-checking statements made during the debate.
The results will be posted on this website as well as those of the other -
Quebec election: Lower immigration would hurt Montreal, Plante says
Having fewer immigrants entering Montreal each year would be a problem for the city, Mayor Valérie Plante says.
Plante made the comments on Monday during a provincial election campaign that in recent weeks has been dominated by the question of Quebec immigration levels.
“Yes,” Plante said when asked if having fewer newcomers would cause problems for Montreal. “Right now, the percentage of unoccupied jobs is already three per cent in Montreal, so that’s already -
Free legal advice lectures for Pincourt residents
The city of Pincourt is offering some free legal advice to local residents this fall.
A series of lectures about various legal issues will be given, in French and English, by notary and legal adviser Myriam Léger.
Topics covered include the importance of writing a will, how to settle a succession? the purpose of a power of attorney and/or protection mandate and the steps involved in buying or selling a property?
English sessions take place at St.Patrick’s Elementary School, at 261 S -
Canadiens Notebook: Jesperi Kotkaniemi not feeling pressure at training camp
All eyes will be on Jesperi Kotkaniemi when the Canadiens play their first of seven exhibition games Monday night at the Bell Centre against the New Jersey Devils (7:30 p.m., TSN2, RDS, TSN 690 Radio).
The Canadiens selected the 6-foot-2, 184-pounder in the first round (third overall) at this year’s NHL Draft after he posted 10-19-29 totals in 57 games last season with Assat Pori in the Finnish Elite League. There’s going to be a lot of pressure on the 18-year-old as the Canadiens lo -
Simons sorry for 'poor taste' bra campaign, apologizes to former chief justice
Simons clothing store has issued a formal public apology — with a special appeal to former chief justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin — for its recent promotional campaign to sell bras named after important women in Canadian history, including the “Beverley bralette.”
Calling the campaign in “poor taste,” Peter Simons, the president and CEO of the Quebec City-based company, also apologized to McLachlin, the only living woman featured in the ads, for the &ldquo -
Construction begins for REM station on McGill College Ave.
Motorists and pedestrians will not be able to use the east side of McGill College Ave. over the next four months because construction has begun for the Réseau express métropolitain McGill station.
Workers must relocate infrastructure for public utilities and municipal services between de Maisonneuve Blvd. and Ste-Catherine St. The work will create noise and dust, the REM warns.
One lane of traffic, in each direction, will be allowed on the west side of McGill College Ave. -
'The boss here is me': Judge faces possible reprimand after yelling at guard
A Quebec Court judge found himself before a panel of his peers who will determine if he was out of line when he yelled at a prison guard during a hearing at the Montreal courthouse last year.
Judge Jean-Paul Braun, who retired this year, appeared before the Conseil de la magistrature du Québec on Monday and is scheduled to have another hearing before the judicial council that oversees the behaviour of judges, for comments made in a different case, in the coming weeks.
On April 20, 2017, B -
Lise Ravary: What resurgence of hate groups in Quebec?
In a recent article, Ottawa-based human rights lawyer Richard Warman was quoted as saying that the ultra right-wing group Atalante Québec was part of a resurgence of right-wing hate groups in Québec.
Pardon moi? A resurgence? As I recall, the last time there were right-wing hate groups in Quebec, and in Canada, worth worrying about was in the 1930s.
Atalante Québec is a nasty piece of work. Its slogan “to exist is to fight against what denies my existence” c -
Quebec election: Legault is an expert on immigration, Granby candidate says
SAINT-SAUVEUR — The day after Coalition Avenir Québec Leader François Legault erred repeatedly over two successive days on basic questions about Canada’s immigration laws, his candidate in the riding of Granby declared him an “expert” on citizenship regulations.
“Of course Mr. Legault is an expert on immigration,” said François Bonnardel. “We explained our idea two years ago. We want to receive 40,000 immigrants, we want them to spea -
Opinion: It's 4 a.m., and I'm thinking about the Quebec election
I wish I were a politician. But I’m not. I’m just a no-name philosophy professor. The destiny of humankind is in someone else’s hands.
I’m assuming most Quebecers feel powerless, like I do. I wish I had power to make the world a safer and fairer place to live. I wish I could make it so that all people would thrive and be happy. It’s cheesy, I know, but that’s what I’m hoping for. I listen to the news and all I hear is wildfires, -
Quebec election: PQ 'Made in Quebec' message derailed by Blanc controversy
As the Parti-Québécois presented its economic policy Monday morning that centred on a “Made in Quebec” label, Leader Jean-François Lisée once again had to sidestep questions about embattled Mercier candidate Michelle Blanc.
On Sunday, Blanc turned down an invitation to be an honorary co-president of the annual gala by LGBTQ+ organization Équipe Montréal after the group distanced itself from Blanc because of online comments she made -
Alouettes practice: It appears Johnny Manziel is back as team's top QB
It certainly appears Johnny Manziel is the Alouettes’ starting QB — again.
The team returned to practice Monday morning, and Manziel was taking all the reps with the starting offence.
Manziel, acquired in a July trade from Hamilton, started two games, both losses, before suffering a concussion.
He was replaced by rookie Antonio Pipkin, who went 2-2 over four games, but struggled on Friday in a 32-14 home loss to the B.C. Lions, passing for only 95 yards.
Pipkin was intercepted four t -
Quebec election: Liberals promise more money to buy electric cars
The Quebec Liberal Party wants to add more electric cars to the road by offering Quebecers an extra $1,000 rebate to buy one, Leader Philippe Couillard announced Monday morning.
The additions would bring the total rebate available in Quebec for buying electric cars to $9,000. The rebate is only available for cars under $75,000.
A Liberal government would also add a $200 grant for people to buy chargers for their homes, bringing that total to $800.
While making the promise, the party said it help -
Driver, 82, in critical condition after SUV, truck collide in St-Léonard
An 82-year-old man was in critical condition Monday morning after the SUV he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer at the corner of Pascale Gagnon St. and Des Grandes Prairies Blvd. in the borough of St-Léonard.
The accident happened at 9:50 a.m. Witnesses interviewed by police say the collision occurred when the truck, travelling north of Pascal Gagnon, turned left to head west on Des Grandes Prairies at the same moment the SUV was travelling south through the intersection on Pasca -
Quebec election: Québec solidaire vows to clean up corruption
Québec solidaire promises to take steps to clean up corruption in the province if the party is elected on Oct. 1.
The party says it would change the way the leaders of Quebec’s anti-corruption unit and the Sûreté du Québec are selected.
Within the first 100 days of a mandate, Québec solidaire would change the rules so that future leaders are chosen by members of the National Assembly, co-spokesperson Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois said Monday.
The internal structur -
Montreal authors well represented on Giller Prize long list
ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Novelists Esi Edugyan and Patrick DeWitt are among the familiar names on this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize long list.
Michael Redhill, last year’s winner, announced the contenders at a ceremony Monday in St. John’s, N.L.
The prize awards $100,000 to the winner and $10,000 to the other finalists.
A short list will be announced Oct. 1 and the winner will be announced at a televised gala in Toronto on Nov. 19.
Edugyan, who is nominated this year fo -

Watch: What makes Jean-François Lisée tick?
The Parti Québécois may be languishing third in the polls and its raison d’être — making Quebec a sovereign nation — is less popular than it’s been in a generation, but you wouldn’t know that by watching Jean-Francçois Lisée.
While his rivals labour through carefully scripted talking points, the 60-year-old is part standup comic, part itinerant preacher at his nightly rallies. He appears to be having the time of his life. -
Quebec election: Bring cochlear-implant surgery to Montreal, coalition pleads
With the support of Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante, a coalition of parents and medical specialists is urging the four main political parties campaigning before the Oct. 1 provincial vote to commit to establishing cochlear-implant surgery in Montreal.
At present, Montreal-area residents who are deaf or who suffer from profound hearing loss must travel multiple times to Quebec City for pre-surgical assessment, for the surgery itself and then afterward to activate and program the cochlear imp -
Quebec election: CAQ pledges $5 million for Alzheimer's research
SAINT-SAUVEUR — Coalition Avenir Québec says it will increase provincial funding into Alzheimer’s research by $5 million a year, and reopen the debate on advanced consent for medically assisted deaths for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and related diseases.
CAQ candidates Marguerite Blais and François Bonnardel made the announcements in St-Sauveur Monday morning. Leader François Legault was absent, preparing for Monday evening’s English-language lea -
Cops arrest 6 teens, 1 adult in connection with rash of arson in Laval
Laval police have arrested seven suspects between the ages of 15 and 18 in connection with a series of fires they contend caused more than $375,000 in damages since last May.
The suspects were arrested last Thursday and police allege the fires and vandalism targeted parks and other public spaces in the city’s Chomedey and Fabreville districts.
While evidence garnered thus far links the suspects to only four events, an investigation is examining a total of 87 incidents causing $377,000 in d -
While you were sleeping: Bumper crop of squirrels drives farmers nuts
Here’s what happened while you were enjoying some well-deserved rest.
A man in his 30s lost his life in St-Placide in the Laurentians, presumably after falling asleep at the wheel. Police were informed by a passerby shortly of a vehicle overturned in a field on Highway 344. Emergency responders declared the 35-year-old man from St-André-d’Argenteuil dead at the scene. Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Claude Denis said the vehicle’s engine was c -
Repeat sex offender Robert Laramée to remain at Montreal halfway house
A Montreal man with a long record of sexually abusing women and girls has been ordered to spend another year in a halfway house as a means to control the risk he represents of reoffending.
The Parole Board of Canada made the decision last week requiring that Robert Laramée, 55, not only reside at a halfway house, but that he be required to return to it every night.
The condition was first imposed in 2016 when Laramée finished serving the entirety of a 39-month sentence he received -
Renegade MPs to return to Bloc Québécois caucus
