Victor Boyle started hearing about it early Tuesday morning via Facebook.
Large election signs — two touting the Parti Québécois, one the Liberals — had popped up next to the Black Rock in the median of Bridge St. near the Victoria Bridge. One of the most solemn places for Montreal’s Irish community, the boulder commemorates the 6,000 poor Irish immigrants who escaped the Great Famine only to die of typhus in Montreal. They were buried in mass graves

Quebec election blog Sept. 11: Irish denounce campaign signs in Black Rock cemetery
This was the Montreal Gazette’s live blog on the Quebec provincial election for Tuesday, Sept. 11.4:45 p.m.: Pre-election strikes?
Quebec’s two major television networks may be hit by strikes during the election campaign.
About 800 workers at TVA, including journalists and administrative workers, may strike on Sept. 22,
That’s the same day that 3,000 employees at Radio-Canada, including journalists and technicians, are to hold a meeting and perhaps hold a strike vote, Le Devoir -
Quebec election: Couillard vows to stick to values of 'majority of Quebecers'
The polls may show that Quebecers want change, but Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard insists that’s what his government has been giving them.
“Look at Quebec today, in 2018, compared with Quebec in 2014,” he said on Tuesday. “Quebec has been transformed by the policies and the good management of our government.”
But a poll released on Tuesday morning suggests that message isn’t resonating with voters and that, as the provincial election campaign reaches its ha -
Stu Cowan: Brendan Gallagher should be next captain of the Canadiens
If I had a vote for the next captain of the Canadiens it would go to Brendan Gallagher.
Of course, I don’t have a vote and I don’t think any of the Canadiens players will, either, when the team gets around to naming a new captain to replace Max Pacioretty, who was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. Expect management to name the next captain.
Pacioretty was voted captain by his teammates three years ago, but he wouldn’t have been GM Marc Bergevin’s choice. Berge -
Threat that closed Beaconsfield High was aimed at U.S. school
Beaconsfield High School was closed Tuesday morning after Montreal police alerted school officials about a social media post that threatened students.
But the threat against BHS on the West Island was unfounded, police said on Tuesday afternoon following an investigation.
There was a threat made on Monday against a high school with the initials BHS, but it was directed at students at Brunswick High School in Georgia.
Parents of children in schools with the initials BHS from Kentucky to Ontario w -
Man charged in bizarre Mile End death and dismemberment led nomadic life
A murder case brought against a travelling musician who is alleged to have killed and dismembered a fellow bandmate inside an apartment they were sharing in Mile End weeks before police even knew the victim was missing is scheduled to return before a judge at the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, Raymond Henry Muller, 51, was charged with the first-degree murder of Cedric Gagnon, a fellow musician. According to reports, both men were part of a Montreal band called Pirates! Th -
Russell Copeman is named QESBA executive director
The Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) has named former politician Russell Copeman as its new executive director.
The association — which represents 100,000 students in 340 elementary schools, high schools and adult and vocational centres across the province — made the announcement Tuesday. The position had been vacant for 17 months. Copeman was a longtime MNA for the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce riding and served as the Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dam -
Watch — Quebec election: Straight talk on Manon Massé
In the first of our profiles of the leaders of Quebec’s four major party leaders, Michelle Lalonde offered this extensive profile of Manon Massé, the co-spokesperson for Québec solidaire.
Writes Lalonde: “Much has been made of the fact that Massé does not conform to the stereotype of the carefully groomed and packaged politician. She favours tunics and trousers over power suits or tailored dresses, she buys her clothes at friperies, and she doesn’t dye -

Pacioretty trade took 2 months to complete and came down to wire
While Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin obviously believes his team will have a better “attitude” now that Max Pacioretty is gone, Vegas Golden Knights GM George McPhee said he is thrilled to have the former Montreal captain on his team.
After saying “attitude” was the biggest problem with the Canadiens’ last season when they finished 28th overall in the NHL standings, Bergevin traded his captain to the Golden Knights on Monday in exchange for veteran win -
Baby daughter helps Canadiens' Andrew Shaw deal with recovery
Andrew Shaw loves being a new dad.
“It’s good. The wife’s a little tired … she’s the one that gets up with her. But it’s fun,” Shaw said before the start of the Canadiens’ golf tournament Monday at Laval-sur-le-Lac. “It’s relaxing. It’s nice being in bed on a Saturday night in summer by 11 o’clock. She’s going to get you up pretty early, but it’s been fun. She’s awesome. She laughs a lot. She loves her foo -
Quebec election: Legault challenges Couillard on immigration
LAVAL — A day after saying he doesn’t believe it’s the ballot question of the election, François Legault is challenging Quebec Liberal Party Leader Philippe Couillard to announce his plans for immigration in the province.
“A campaign is an important moment to do debates, but Mr. Couillard doesn’t seem to want to do any debates on the number of immigrants,” the Coalition Avenir Québec leader said Tuesday morning.
“I think Quebecers hav -
Quebec election: Free public transit for seniors, students: Liberals
A re-elected Liberal government would give free public transit to seniors and students, leader Philippe Couillard said on Tuesday.
The party would also develop an application and smart card system — like the Opus card used by the STM — that would be accepted by public transit agencies across the province.
The Liberals would also encourage the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec to begin studying the expansion of the Réseau express métrop -

Quebec election: PQ plans Glutton Tax for execs, hike in minimum wage
The salaries of the “ultra-rich” would be taxed, and those of the heads of provincial Crown corporations would be scaled back, Parti Québécois Leader Jean-François Lisée pledged Tuesday.
Campaigning at the Université de Montréal, the party unveiled its plans to crack down on tax evasion and address the issue of wage parity between average Quebec workers and the most wealthy.
If the Parti Québécois forms the government after the -
Canadiens' Claude Julien faces new challenges as team rebuilds
When Claude Julien was hired to replace Michel Therrien as coach of the Canadiens on Feb. 14, 2017, the team was still in first place in the Atlantic Division with a 31-19-8 record.
The Canadiens were slumping, with a 1-5-1 record in their last seven games and were 18-18-7 since starting the season 13-1-1. The Canadiens went 16-7-1 under Julien to finish first in the Atlantic Division with 103 points before being eliminated in six games by the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs. -

Update: Beaconsfield High closed after threatening social media post
Beaconsfield High School was closed on Tuesday morning after Montreal police alerted school officials about a threatening social media post.
“Due to a posting on a social media platform concerning BHS, the police arrived and are around the school in an active investigation,” said Jim Hendry, a spokesperson for the Lester B. Pearson School Board.

Update: Woman, 87, dies after being hit by a car in St-Laurent
An 87-year-old woman died early Tuesday morning after she was struck by a vehicle at an intersection in the St-Laurent borough.
The woman was rushed to a hospital after the accident, which occurred after 9 p.m. at the intersection of Côte-Vertu Blvd. and Dutrisac St. She was trying to cross Dutrisac on a red light when she was hit, Montreal police say.
It was the 19th fatal collision in Montreal this year. -
While you were sleeping: Jeopardy's beard poll and California's pot
Here’s a look at a couple of stories that bubbled up overnight while you were trying to conjure a dream of a new future for the Habs.
Wait. How does anyone under 30 know about Jeopardy? Alex Trebek sported a beard as he launched the 35th season of Jeopardy! and the look has led to a poll. The bearded host appeared in a video on Instagram under the caption, “It’s time to embark upon a magical journey.” He opened the first show of the season by saying, “No need t -
Simmering Alcoa labour dispute morphs into 'clash of the titans'
Workers of the Alcoa Corp.-controlled Becancour smelter in Quebec stand guard under umbrellas outside the gates. Whenever a vehicle approaches, a pair scurries to take down the driver’s details and make sure there’s no scab labourer in disguise.
The ritual, witnessed on a rainy August morning, has become part of life at the aluminum plant since January, when the company locked out more than 1,000 employees represented by the United Steelworkers union. The entrance is also where tensi -
Hudson Porchfest music fest nudges neighbours closer together
I’ve always longed for a house with a big front porch. There’s just something welcoming and friendly about a home with a porch.
Porches nudge neighbours to notice each other. Hanging out on a front porch creates opportunities for friendly smiles and conversations with passing neighbours that you just don’t get cloistered away in your backyard.
The daily hellos and how-are-yous exchanged with neighbours aren’t as trivial as they seem: these little tokens of kindness create -
Quebec election: Liberals are slipping in latest poll as war for nationalist votes rages
Midway through the election campaign, Quebec’s Liberals are getting no fresh traction with voters while the Coalition Avenir Québec appears to be stuck on a rung trying to climb the ladder to power for the first time ever, a new poll suggests.
In fact, Liberal leader Philippe Couillard’s troops have slipped back to where they were at the start of the campaign. Aside from the small bump the party got from the return of the lost sheep in the non-francophone community two weeks a -
Drug dealer tied to murdered Mob-tied loan shark granted day parole
A Laval man who recently admitted he served as the longtime right-hand man to a powerful Mafia-tied loan shark who was murdered five years ago has been granted day parole. He is serving a sentence for cocaine possession as well as the small collection of firearms found when police searched his home.
Nicolae-Catalin Vinersar, 51, does not have much in terms of a criminal record but, according to a written summary of a decision made late last week by the Parole Board of Canada, he recently admitte -
Naqvi-Mohamed: Bereavement camp helps children move forward from loss
Losing a parent or loved one, or a significant life change can be hard enough for anyone to cope with. For children, however, it can be downright life-altering. Thankfully, local Montreal children can benefit from the Carousel Bereavement program. The most recent one was held this past weekend at Cap St-Jacques regional park in Pierrefonds.

Quebec election: Liberals slipping in latest poll as war for nationalist votes rages

“Take in less,” he said of new immigrants to Quebec, “but take better -

While Pacioretty and his agent, Allan Walsh, say the player never asked for a trade, Molson said that wasn’t true and so did GM Marc Bergevi -

TIFF review: Xavier Dolan's The Death and Life of John F. Donovan will divide critics
Xavier Dolan’s The Death and Life of John F. Donovan had its world première at the Toronto International Film Festival Monday evening, placing the Quebec director in a vulnerable position that is all too familiar to him.
“I can’t help but sense the energy (of journalists) walking in, asking me questions after seeing (press screenings of) the film,” he had told The Gazette, 24 hours before. “It has not been the most reassuring 24 hours of my life.”

Canadiens' Bell Centre sellout streak in jeopardy after dismal season
The Canadiens boast the longest string of sold-out games in the NHL, with the streak extending to the end of the lockout in 2005, but that doesn’t mean the Bell Centre has always been full.
There were an embarrassing number of no-shows last season as the Canadiens stumbled to one of the worst records in the team’s history.
The team insisted that all the seats were sold, but there were nights when tickets were still available minutes before the puck drop, a far cry from the days when -

“He’s the guy this week. We take it week by week. Hopefully, he’ll keep developing and other quarterbacks will develop,” Sherman said following Monday’s practice, the -
