Nick Suzuki, a 19-year-old forward, is the key return in the trade that sent Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty to the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Canadiens also obtained NHL veteran Tomas Tatar and a second-round draft pick next June, but general manager Marc Bergevin made it clear that Suzuki is part of the Canadiens’ plan to get younger and faster.
“Vegas selected him 13th overall and we had him at 11 on our list,” Bergevin said Monday prior to teeing off at the Canadiens’

Stu Cowan: Pacioretty became convenient scapegoat for Habs’ failings
When Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin and former head coach Michel Therrien showed up at the wrong house three years ago to let Max Pacioretty know he was the team’s new captain it might have been a sign from the hockey gods.
The “C” ended up standing for cursed and after missing the playoffs twice and being eliminated in the first round once during his three seasons as captain, Pacioretty is now gone to the Vegas Golden Knights.
What started as such a happy story when Bergevin and T -
Quebec election notebook: Jobless numbers, debate prep and Pacioretty vs. Subban
Last week, we put into context some of the numbers Coalition Avenir Québec Leader François Legault uses when discussing immigrants and the French language.
Here’s a look at another number.
On Friday, Legault suggested 15 per cent of new immigrants to Quebec are unemployed during their first years in Quebec. He used the figure when discussing his plan to cut immigration by 20 per cent (10,000 fewer immigrants per year).
But just as newcomers tend to le -
Quebec election blog Sept. 10: Online outbursts, new ads and relaxed campaign moments
This was the Montreal Gazette’s live blog on the Quebec provincial election for Monday, Sept. 10.4:35 p.m.: New poll Tuesday
We have in our hot little hands the results of a new Montreal Gazette-Le Devoir– Léger poll, conducted Sept. 7-10.
Philip Authier will have a full story at montrealgazette.com at midnight — and in the paper on Tuesday morning.
In the meantime, here’s a preview by Phil and one by Stéphane Baillargeon on Le Devoir’s site. -
Brownstein: Pacioretty trade trumps all other talk in town, even about Trump
Forget the Quebec election campaign. Forget NAFTA. Forget Oval Office lunacy. The Max Pacioretty trade seemed to pretty much trump other conversations in town Monday, even Trump talk.
Though some weren’t aware of the players the Canadiens received from the Vegas Golden Knights in return for the former team captain — it was forward Tomas Tatar, junior prospect Nick Suzuki and a second-round pick at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft — mostly everyone had an opinion.
Jon Cercone, co-owner -
Allison Hanes: Blowing the political dog whistle, just audibly enough
So far during the 2018 Quebec election campaign, allegations of drunk driving, involvement with a company whose business practices would be illegal in Quebec and calling for Islam to be banned have been grounds for candidates to step down or be shunted aside.
But comments about forgetting to celebrate Hitler’s birthday and dropping N-bombs? Not so much…
Parti Québécois candidate Michelle Blanc continues to push the limits of what is considered acceptable discourse from -
Quebec election: Leadership debates might influence undecided voters, poll finds
A new poll shows that with three weeks to go before the election, 38 per cent of Quebecers could still change their minds on who they will vote for.
And more than four voters in 10 (44 per cent) say the upcoming televised leadership debates might influence their vote, a piece of data that will only increase the pressure on the leaders of the four main parties as they prepare to square off under the lights.
On the other hand, 49 per cent say the debates won’t influence their vote.

What the Puck: Who is twisting the truth in l'Affaire Pacioretty?
Someone is not telling the truth. It’s as simple as that.
Max Pacioretty and his agent, Allan Walsh, spent the past several weeks insisting that the captain of the Canadiens wanted to stay with the team and that he never asked for a trade.
Here’s what Walsh said on TSN 690 a few days ago: “I would tell you this and I’m going to say it directly and I hope everybody hears me and understands this: Max Pacioretty has never, never ever requested a trade out of Montre -
Quebec election: Lisée continues to stand by controversial candidate Michelle Blanc
ALMA — Jean-François Lisée continued to defend candidate Michelle Blanc on Monday amid mounting criticism about her past comments, specifically a 2011 tweet that she “forgot to celebrate Adolph Hitler’s birthday.”
Campaigning in Quebec City, Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard said that he wasn’t going to tell Lisée what to do, but jokes about Hitler cross the line of acceptable comment.
“We have a society of freedom and one of our -
Jack Todd: Habs GM Bergevin garners nice haul in return for Pacioretty
Max Pacioretty is a sweet and gentle soul. Too sweet and gentle, you might think, for the helter-skelter mayhem of the National Hockey League, with its sharp elbows, sharper skate blades and still sharper critics ready to pounce on every move.
Yet gentle Max has prospered in the world of gap-toothed warriors, and rose to become both a feared sniper and captain of the once mighty Montreal Canadiens. Not bad for a college boy from Connecticut.
Much has been written — and much more will be wr -

TIFF 2018: Kim Nguyen takes flight with The Hummingbird Project
TORONTO — Kim Nguyen may have found his ticket to ride. The Quebec director’s career could jump a few significant notches with The Hummingbird Project, which had its world première Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The very funny, highly entertaining and surprisingly poignant movie is Nguyen’s best since his Oscar-nominated (for best foreign language film) Rebelle in 2012.
It has star power to spare, with Jesse Eisenberg and Alexander Skarsg&ari -

Strong growth in container traffic from Europe to Canada will create 65 new full-time jobs at the Port of Montreal.

In the coming weeks, the association experts to hire 50 longshoremen and 15 checkers to “help meet the demands of the strong growth in container traffic from Europe at the Port of Montreal.” This is i -

Truck driver injured in accident in Anjou
A truck driver was injured on Monday after he suddenly slammed on the brakes, causing the cargo he was carrying to trap him inside his cab.
Police said the man was driving north on the Highway 25 service road in Anjou when the accident happened. Several witnesses called 911 to say the driver couldn’t get out of the truck. The driver was taken to a hospital with injuries.

Lise Ravary: Here's to a Jewish new year free of anti-Semitism, divisions
My conversion to Judaism, when I was given a Jewish soul, was completed on Aug. 17, 1999. The process had lasted six years. After years of doing and learning and wondering “Why me, why this, why now?” nothing made sense, so I decided to “just be it.”
Still, why it was that when I first stood at the Wall in Jerusalem in February 1993, I had never felt more at home and at peace in my life, remains a mystery of cosmic proportions.
I flew home transformed and confused. &ldquo -
Quebec election: Anti-Semitism question continues to dog PQ's Lisée
Jean François Lisée’s election campaign faced questions for a second straight day about his continued support for embattled candidate Michelle Blanc.
Blanc, who is running for the Parti Québecois in the Mercier riding, had already been in the media for several inflammatory statements. On Sunday, a letter from B’nai Brith Canada, made public by the PQ, revealed she called herself “intolerant” toward Outremont’s Hasidic community in a blog post fr -
Quebec election: QS pledges to improve intercity bus service
Québec solidaire wants to improve intercity bus service in the regions by creating a public bus company that would increase service to smaller cities across the province.
The Agence du transport interurbain’s mandate would be to “develop a reliable and affordable public bus network across Quebec.”
The party’s spokesperson Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois made the announcement Monday morning. He said the intercity bus network has deteriorated over the past few years.

Six O’Clock Solution: Gratin of Haddock with Tomato and Zucchini
The new cookbook One Pan, Whole Family should appeal to the busy family meal provider.
If you have a big, cast-iron frying pan as well as a big saucepan and a serious chef’s knife, you are all set to cook Carla Snyder’s more than 70 “weeknight meals”, as she calls them in her latest book (Chronicle Books/Raincoast, $34.95).
Her homey fish dinner is an example of her way of feeding the family fresh food in a rush. Kid-friendly aspects to the book include many pizza re -
Woman critically hurt after being hit by truck in Cartierville
A woman in her 60s is in critical condition after being struck by a truck in Cartierville Monday morning.
The woman was walking westbound on de Salaberry St. when she was hit by a truck that was turning north from de Salaberry to O’Brien Blvd. The woman is being treated in a hospital for serious injuries to her upper and lower body and police said they fear for her life.
The truck driver was treated at the scene for shock.
Montreal police are investigating the accident. -
A look at the players Canadiens got in exchange for Max Pacioretty
Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin obviously didn’t want the Max Pacioretty Saga to drag on into the team’s annual golf tournament.
The Canadiens announced at 1:08 a.m. Monday that captain Pacioretty had been traded to the Vegas Golden Knight in exchange for Tomas Tatar, Nick Suzuki and a second-round pick at the 2019 NHL Draft. The Canadiens golf tournament is Monday at Laval-sur-le-lac.
After four straight seasons with at least 30 goals, Pacioretty slumped last season to 17 in -
SAQ employees strike again Monday after wildcard Sunday
Employees at Quebec’s liquor board are on strike for a second consecutive day Monday.
On Sunday, their union tried to surprise the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) by moving up a strike day that had been planned for Monday.
Monday’s strike day is the fourth of six planned one-day strikes for the employees, who have been without a contract since March 2017. The employees voted 91 per cent in favour of the strike days.

Quebec election: CAQ promises $800 million help keep seniors at home
CHÂTEAUGUAY — A Coalition Avenir Québec government would look to allow seniors to stay in their own homes longer by investing $800 million in home care during its first mandate, Leader François Legault said Monday.
Legault made the announcement while visiting a retirement home in Châteauguay Monday morning. Legault said the party would also develop a province-wide policy on the issue to standardize home care throughout Quebec and prevent “health facilit -
Quebec election: Immigrants can help fix regions' labour woes: Liberals
A re-elected Liberal government would help rural municipalities attract and retain immigrant workers to overcome labour shortages across Quebec, Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard announced Monday.
Visiting a business and IT consulting company in Quebec City, Couillard said the shortage of qualified workers will be the main economic challenge facing the province in the next few years.
He promised, if returned to power, to take all possible measures to meet that need, from improving vocationa -
While you were sleeping: Goodbye Patches and #MeToo hits primetime

Allison Hanes: 'Better safe than sorry' when it comes to EpiPen use
Parents and children living with allergies are vigilant about keeping their precious EpiPens close at hand in case of a life-threatening reaction. In case you missed it, here's what happened in Montreal on Sept. 9
Busy day? Here’s what you might have missed.
Quebec’s liquor board employees walked off the job in a surprise strike, kicking off a third day of job action one day earlier than planned. Sunday represents the third of six planned one-day strikes for the employees, who have been without a contract since March 2017. They are expected to be off on Monday as well. While the majority of the 400 SAQ liquor stores were closed during the strike, some remained open and were staffed by man -

The pedestrian was crossing Jeanne-Mance St. at René-Lévesque Blvd. when he was hit at 2:45 a.m. Preliminary reports suggest the victim was crossing against the light. The man was brought to a hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.
Montreal police say it is the 18th fatal collision in 2018.
The driver of the vehicle, a woman around 30 years old, was treated -
Quebec election: CAQ's financial plan doesn't add up, Couillard says
TROIS-RIVIÈRES — Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard slammed his two main rivals Sunday for what he called an unrealistic financial framework and the fanning of unfounded fears on the future of French.
Like a teacher marking a student essay in red pencil, Couillard enumerated gaps in the financial plan unveiled Saturday by Coalition Avenir Québec Leader François Legault.
“It was bit too quick, a bit rough, an exercise that should be redone,” Couillard said at -
Canadiens rookies show some fight in 4-2 loss to Maple Leafs
Last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs finished seventh in the overall NHL standings, 34 points ahead of the Canadiens, who were 28th out of 31 teams.
The Toronto Marlies won the Calder Cup, while the Laval Rocket finished dead-last in the 30-team AHL.
This summer, the Maple Leafs added prized free-agent John Tavares, while the Canadiens replaced Alex Galchenyuk with Max Domi, who scored nine goals last season with the Arizona Coyotes, including four empty-netters.
These are two franchises headed -
Quebec election: 'Santa Claus Couillard' spending out of control, Legault says
MAGOG — On the same weekend as he conceded this might not be the election where English-speaking Quebecers board his train, a confident Coalition Avenir Québec leader François Legault has continued to dip into the electoral pools of his opponents.
If you are Parti Québécois member, why not “temporarily” put your sovereignist views on hold and vote CAQ to get rid of the Liberals, he said in Magog Sunday after walking tough the annual wine festivals.

Stu Cowan: What's in a number at Canadiens' rookie camp?
There are some familiar old numbers with new faces at the Canadiens’ rookie camp.
On Sunday at Place Bell in Laval, T.J. Melancon was wearing No. 79 and Josh Brook had No. 76 as the Canadiens lost 4-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the final game of the NHL Rookie Showdown. They brought back memories of Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban, who used to wear those numbers.
Markov and Subban are two players Canadiens management would like to forget even though they both never wanted to leave Montrea -
TIFF 2018: Xavier Dolan and Natalie Portman laugh it up
TORONTO — Laughter emanated from the hotel room Xavier Dolan had just entered to join Natalie Portman — not polite chuckles but boisterous guffaws.
Portman co-stars in the Quebec director’s long-awaited English-language debut The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, which has its world première Monday evening at the Toronto International Film Festival.
A soft-spoken woman who chooses her words carefully, Portman does not come across as the guffawing type; but as would be d -
Aussie Michael Matthews conquers Mount Royal for rare Quebec double
Australian Michael Matthews completed a rare Quebec double as he overtook Italian Sonny Colbrelli in the final 20 metres to win the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal on Sunday.
The victory came two days after Matthews captured the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec. He’s only the second rider to sweep the UCI World Tour events. His good friend and fellow Aussie Simon Gerrans won both races in 2014. Gerrans, who has announced his retirement at the end of this season, was never in the -
