The construction holiday comes to an end Sunday, but delays at the U.S. border to come into Canada could be felt as of Saturday according to the Canadian Border Services Agency.
Quebecers returning from the United States makes this weekend one of the busiest of the year for border services, especially at the St-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing.
Véronique Lalime, spokesperson for the Border Services Agency, advises travellers returning from the United States this weekend to have receipts

Trans parents will share their demands at a Montreal demonstration on Sunday.
Organized by the collective Euphorie dans le genre, the fifth annual Trans March focuses on the theme of family in its various meanings.
About 500 people are expected to march from Place de la Paix to the Gay Village. The event is family-friendly and political, said a spokesperson for the march.
“It’s not a parade,” said Raphaële Sévigny.
Even though trans people can now change their gende -

It’s hot out there.

Festival goers should drink plenty of water even before they feel thirsty.
Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhausti -

Serena Williams withdraws from Rogers Cup, cites personal reasons
Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup Canadian Open women’s tennis championships.
Williams, who accepted a wild-card entry into the event last week, cited personal reasons for her decision.
Tennis Canada announced her withdrawal Saturday morning, two hours before qualifying play began at the Jarry Park Tennis Centre. Williams, who reached the final at Wimbledon earlier this year, retired to action this week and lost to Johanna Konta 6-0, 6-1 in San Jose. It was the most one-sid -
Another heat wave in Quebec: temperatures to feel as high as 40 degrees
Another heat wave has settled over a large part of Quebec.
Temperatures in the south, centre and west of the province are expected to feel as high as 40 degrees Celsius through Monday.
Rain is expected Saturday in several regions. Humidity could also lead to severe thunderstorms.
Sunday will bring the best weather of the weekend.
Recent rainfall has reduced the number of forest fires in Quebec. Only three fires are active, allowing the Société de protection des forêts contre -

Thailand’s rescued cave boys end stay at Buddhist temple
With their heads bowed and wearing orange robes, the members of the boys’ soccer team rescued from almost three weeks trapped in a cave in northern Thailand on Saturday completed their time as novice Buddhist monks.
About 300 people gathered for the ceremony on a rainy morning that saw the boys leave temple life to return to their families. Those present gave alms — flowers, food, money — as a gesture of their relig -
Montreal migrant justice organizations denounce new Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime
Migrant justice organizations are demanding that the new federal department of Border Security and Organized Crime be abolished.
The Trudeau government recently appointed Bill Blair as the Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime.
The organizations will hold a demonstration Saturday at the Montreal offices of the Canada Border Services Agency.
The Trudeau government is attempting to “appease racists opposed to migrants” by creating the new position, the groups say.

Karl Lohnes: Turn your teen’s room into their dream room
In only a month, it’ll be back to school, with the rush to buy the right school supplies and the coolest, on-trend jeans. But before the busyness of September strikes, make the most of the lull of late summer by refreshing and redecorating for your favourite teens. New paint, on-trend affordable furnishings, a few mandatory days of decluttering and you and your teen can create a stylish space for sleeping, homework and hanging out with friends. Give your teens a place to get away from the -

New Montreal social platform Luminance aims to help people help others
University students, working in pairs or threes, invite the homeless of downtown Halifax to share a meal and get to know them. A couple in Caraquet, N.B., is building a net zero home — a structure that produces as much clean energy as it consumes.

Inside the CFL: Alouettes' Mitchell White on the hit that ended his season — and maybe his career
It seemed like a routine play at the time — one Mitchell White has completed hundreds of times in his career. The receiver makes the catch and the Alouettes’ field cornerback makes the tackle. Basic, fundamental football.
But this time it was different.
It was well into the fourth quarter, July 26, of yet another Als loss. Edmonton was leading, 41-23. Mike Reilly completed an 18-yard pass to Kenny Stafford. White, in his estimation, hadn’t played a particularly strong game. As -
Hiking Mount Royal: Outremont Summit is a secret worth sharing
PART ONE OF A FOUR-PART SERIES
Mount Royal is more than Beaver Lake, the chalet lookout and the Camillien-Houde belvedere. And it’s best enjoyed on foot.
So I set off to hike the mountain, walking four distinct routes that took me through lush forests, along steep escarpments and to quiet corners so far from Montreal traffic, noise and crowds that I could have been in the backwoods.
Along the way, I took in impressive vistas from some of Montreal’s highest points, and learned about t -
Five traffic hot spots to avoid today

Here are the five zones to stay away from:
Highway 15 North will be closed between the exit for the Highway 20 West and Édouard-Montpetit Blvd. from Friday at 10 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m.
Highway 15 South will be closed between Exit 64 (Sherbrooke St.) and the Turcot Interchange -
Schukov: Public transportation should be free and then some
So some West Islanders went nuts when they caught wind of a supposed stink bomb dropped by the City of Montreal and the provincial (fiefdom) government of Quebec’s plan to build a north-south park and a bus-only lane (instead of an urban boulevard) access through western Pierrefonds to the future Kirkland REM (Isn’t that the name of a rock band?) station along Highway 40 (Isn’t that a Bob Dylan song?)

Montreal weather: Hot, muggy and maybe a little damp
The weekend starts with a mix of sun and cloud with a 40-per-cent chance of showers late in the afternoon.
According to Environment Canada, today is forecasted to reach 29 Celsius with a Humidex of 35 and a UV index of 8, or very high.
Tonight: Cloudy periods with 40-per-cent chance of showers and a low of 19.

Montreal artist Keish JP uses her brush to empower women of colour
Lakeisha Jessica Phillips used to live a double life.
During the day, she worked at a bank; answering calls, helping customers pay their bills and putting a human touch on an otherwise inhuman experience.
At night, Phillips would retreat to her bedroom and paint until the muscles in her hand went numb.
Last year she decided to embrace her alter ego, quit her job at the bank and go it alone in the art world. It hasn’t been easy, but the Montrealer is eking out a living as a painter.

Five free events that enliven Montreal theatre’s busy off-season
Montreal theatre’s fall season is beginning to appear over the horizon, but there’s still plenty to enjoy for the rest of the summer, much of it free. Here are five events that won’t set you back a cent, give or take the occasional passing of the hat.

Johnny Manziel's debut a dud as Alouettes embarrassed at home
Seriously, should we have expected anything else in Johnny Manziel’s Canadian Football League debut with the Alouettes?
Manziel, acquired in a stunning five-player trade from Hamilton on July 22, made his much-anticipated debut Friday night and was forced to eat humble pie.
Manziel, the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy and a former first-round draft choice of the Cleveland Browns, saw his first CFL pass intercepted. He had three more pilfered before the opening half ended.
In short -
Zurkowsky: Johnny Manziel humbled after bad loss, but showed a spark
There’s a process every professional quarterback must endure, complete with hardships and growing pains. It doesn’t matter if your name is Anthony Calvillo and you’re in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, or you’re a 25-year-old rookie named Johnny Manziel.
Manziel might have become the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy when he played collegiately at Texas A&M. He might be a former first-round draft choice of the Cleveland Browns, who played sparingly at the h -

T'Cha Dunlevy: Observations and highlights from Day 1 at Osheaga
The 13th edition of the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival is taking place Aug. 3 to 5 at Île Notre-Dame. We’ll be keeping track of the goings on all weekend. Here are the highlights from Day 1.
4:30 p.m.: Jenny Lewis is not your typical Osheaga act. The L.A. country rocker and former Rilo Kiley frontwoman doesn’t really cater to a young pop fan base, as evidenced by the sparse crowd in front of the River Stage as festivalgoers filed onto the site. The advantage was that you could -
Tough draws for Eugenie Bouchard and Carol Zhao at Rogers Cup
The luck of the draw was all bad for Eugenie Bouchard, as she drew 14th seed Elise Mertens of the Netherlands in the opening round of the Rogers Cup Canadian Open women’s tennis championships.
Bouchard. who has spent the past two weeks rehabbing a right thigh injury, will face Mertens in the featured match at IGA Stadium Monday night. They have had only one previous meeting and Mertens was a 6-2, 6-0 winner on grass in 2016 in the Netherlands.

Obituary: Rick Genest, a.k.a. ’Zombie Boy’, never forgot his Montreal roots
While his unique head-to-toe body art propelled him to international fame on fashion runways and in a Lady Gaga video, the artist and model known as Zombie Boy never forgot his humble beginnings as a Montreal street kid, friends said Friday.
The artist, whose real name was Rick Genest, died at the age of 32, his talent agency confirmed Thursday.
Circus artist Jennifer Bobette, who knew him for 18 years, said the soft-spoken friend she called Zombie lived “two different lives.”

Quebec kidney transplant program aims to boost live donor rate
Three years ago Michel Aubry, now 67, got a kidney donation from his daughter.
“We called it The Transplant Summer,” recalled Aubry. “And an exceptional love story.”
