As my fingers brushed up against a piece of the moon, I couldn’t help but feel a little crass.
Here it was, this 3.8-billion-year-old rock; it orbited Earth at the dawn of life, it stood untouched as empires rose and fell, it outlasted beloved TV series like Flipper, The Monkees and Batman.
I, on the other hand, nearly flunked 10th grade math and once stepped on a rake to see if it would hit me in the face like in the cartoons (it did).
And so, as I crudely groped at the moon rock, I could

MUHC, Monkland Village power cut after construction crew hits gas line
The McGill University Health Centre superhospital and 8,000 households were without power while hundreds of motorists were detoured Monday, all apparently because of work being done in front of one house on Girouard Ave.
When asked, city spokesperson Audrey Gauthier could not provide the Montreal Gazette with details about the work. However, the only evidence of work on that block was a hole in front of a house on the east side of Girouard, just north of Monkland Ave.
The work forced the closure -
Quebec-wide campfire ban lifted
Quebec’s Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks has lifted a province-wide ban on campfires.
The ministry said Monday campfires are now allowed across the province, reversing the ban that had been in effect since last Friday. The decision was effective as of 2:30 p.m.
According to the Société de protection des fôrets contre le feu (SOPFEU), Quebec has seen 452 forest fires this year — significantly higher compared to the 10 year average of 316 fires by this time -
What the Puck: Habs need Carey Price rebound to dodge another disaster
Carey Price is the elephant in the room.
There has been an enormous amount of discussion since the end of the Montreal Canadiens’ disastrous season about how the team will fare as of October, and it goes without saying that many of us don’t share Geoff Molson and Marc Bergevin’s enthusiasm about this squad. Maybe they’ll have a better attitude next season — whatever the heck that means — but most of the chatter has focused on the fact that there simply is -
Poll: Would you go on a nudism vacation?
A growing number of people in France are embracing naturism, or social nudism, the Daily Telegraph reported recently in an article with the headline “French shed inhibitions as craze for nudism grows.”
Not only are they liberating themselves on beaches, but they’re also turning to social nudism for activities like yoga, gym classes and bowling. Even trampolining.
And while in the past naturism was seen as something favoured by middle-age and older people in France, more and mor -
Alouettes acquire receiver Adarius Bowman in trade with Blue Bombers
The Montreal Alouettes have acquired struggling receiver Adarius Bowman from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Bombers sent the 33-year-old Bowman to Montreal for a conditional eighth-round pick in 2019.
An 1,000-yard-plus receiver for three consecutive seasons (2014-16) with Edmonton, Bowman was released by the Eskimos this off-season and picked up by the Blue Bombers.
But Bowman had just nine catches for 95 yards in six games with Winnipeg. The three-time CFL all-star didn’t have a single r -
Caisse de dépôt, Australian fund manager invest $500M in U.S. cell towers
The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and Sydney, Australia-based AMP Capital are investing $500 million in a New York-based telecommunications infrastructure builder. The investment could grow to US$1 billion, the companies said on Monday.
Tillman Infrastructure is currently constructing cellphone towers in more than three dozen U.S. states, the companies said.
U.S. mobile service providers are expected to spend around US$40 billion a year over the next few years o -
Lise Ravary: Belmont Park, Pierre Lalonde and '60s summers in the city
Summer is the perfect time travel machine. Popsicles, coloured bikes and flip flops take me right back to my childhood. But nothing works as well as the intro to the 1963 French hit song, C’est le temps des vacances.
(Neil Sedaka’s Let’s go steady again.)
“Roum dum dum wa la dou, c’est le temps des vacances’,” sang the biggest Quebec pop artist of the time, Pierre Lalonde.
A Hudson man, the impossibly handsome Pierre Lalonde was the son of a Quebec super -
Brownstein: 'Lived many lives', Montreal filmmaker Harry Gulkin has died
No one will dispute this: Harry Gulkin lived a life, and then some.
“Actually, he lived many lives,” Cathy Gulkin noted in assessing the life of her father.
Legendary Montreal filmmaker Harry Gulkin died Monday morning at 90, following a brief bout with pneumonia. Gulkin, an Albert Einstein doppelganger with a flowing mass of white curls and an ever-present impish grin, was an unforgettable character.
His loss is a major blow to the anglo cultural scene, coming quickly on the heels o -
Who is Johnny Manziel?
Quarterback Johnny Manziel, acquired by the Montreal Alouettes in a trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday night, is one of the most recognizable and well-known professional athletes of this generation.
But Manziel, 25, has gained the majority of his notoriety for his off-field controversies.
Born in Tyler Tex., the 6-foot, 210-pounder became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy — awarded annually to the top U.S. college football player — in 2012 while playing at Texas -
Hydro-Québec crew deployed as power failure hits Monkland Village, MUHC
More than 8,000 Hydro-Québec clients in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce’s Monkland Village – as well as the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) – were without power Monday as an outage hit the area at about 11:39 a.m.
The area blacked out is roughly contained by Cavendish Blvd., Côte St. Luc Rd., Decarie Blvd. and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Ave.
The cause of the outage was not immediately clear and Hydro-Québec has dispatched a repair crew. Power at the MUH -
Quebec City mosque attack, #MeToo spiked Canadian violent crime stats
Newly released statistics suggest that the overall number of crimes reported to police — and violent crimes — increased last year in Canada.
And figures made public Monday by Statistics Canada indicate that the attack in January 2017 on a Quebec City mosque and the #MeToo movement played a role in both increases.
The publication containing the statistics notes that “in January 2017, a mass shooting occurred at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec. The attack resulted in six ho -
Chris Chelios rejoins Chicago Blackhawks as a team ambassador
The Chicago Blackhawks announced on Monday that Chris Chelios has joined the club as a team ambassador.
The Hall of Fame defenceman, who is from Chicago, was selected by the Canadiens in the second round (40th overall) at the 1981 NHL Draft and was part of Montreal’s Stanley Cup team in 1986. The Canadiens traded Chelios to the Blackhawks on June 29, 1990, along with a second-round pick at the 1991 NHL Draft (Mike Pomichter) in exchange for Denis Savard.
Savard played three seasons for th -
Teenager and 20-year-old injured in separate stabbing incidents in Laval
A 17-year-old male was recovering in hospital Monday morning after being assaulted with a knife Sunday night in Laval.
The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being attacked at about 7:30 p.m. on Samson Blvd. near Dalhousie Ave. in the city’s Chomedey district.
The assault was the second to take place in the neighbourhood in less than 24 hours. A 20-year-old man was stabbed Sunday morning outside a service station on Curé-Labelle Blvd. near Souvenir -
Montreal heat warning: Humidity, high temperatures will feel like 40C
Forecasting that the Humidex value is expected to reach 40C, Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Montreal, Laval, Longueuil-Varennes and Châteauguay—La Prairie early Monday.
The federal agency notes that a “warm and humid air mass from the United States will track into southern Quebec today. High temperatures combined with humidity will cause the Humidex values near 40 this afternoon,” adding that “uncomfortable conditions will be particularly felt in -
While you were sleeping: Virtue, Moir share space on Walk of Fame (but are still not a couple)
Here are a few things you might have missed while you were sleeping.
Leonard Cohen also takes his place: Olympic medallists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, movie star Seth Rogen and retired astronaut Chris Hadfield are joining Canada’s Walk of Fame. As well, the latest cohort of influential Canadians will include a posthumous honour for Montreal singer Leonard Cohen. In total, 10 people will be recognized at a ceremony slated for December, which also marks the event’s 20th ann -

Dorval's drinking water to be tested during door-to-door campaign
A door-to-door campaign of sampling drinking water is taking place in Dorval over the next two months.
The sampling is part of a bylaw on the quality of potable water by the City of Montreal which is charged with gathering drinking water samples from its distribution networks on annual basis.
“To do so, water is sampled at the faucets of residences, in the homes of citizens who accept to take part in this campaign,” the city of Dorval announced in a statement.

Police comb Old Montreal street after shot fired during early morning brawl
Investigators have closed off a stretch of street in Old Montreal as they seek clues to what happened during an early morning brawl where at least one shot was fired.
Police were called to the scene after receiving 911 calls that a fight had broken out and at least one shot fired on Ste-Hélène St. in Old Montreal.
Once on site, officers saw a large group of people running away from the scene, none of whom would co-operate with police. Investigators were unable to locate any victims -
Parking trumps safety as city delays improving N.D.G. bike path
Grand Blvd. in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce can have parking spots or a safe bike path — but not both.
It seems two Projet Montréal councillors have put off improving a problematic bicycle path because they are at odds over which side of the street should have its parking spots removed. The street is the dividing line between the Loyola and N.D.G. districts they represent.
Although there are bicycle lanes on Grand Blvd. in both directions between Fielding and Monkland Aves, the st -
My Montreal: Ahuntsic tennis ace Françoise Abanda finds her sweet spot
This is the first in an occasional series of profiles in which Montrealers tell us what they love about our city.
Françoise Abanda is one of Canada’s best female tennis players and a fierce competitor on the court. But everyone needs a “comfort zone” to rewind and relax every once in a while, and that’s what the 21-year-old Montrealer calls Cacao 70 on Parc Ave.
“As far as dessert, I love coming here to Cacao 70,” Abanda said while sitting in the eatery -
Allison Hanes: 'Get out of the way and let kids play'
One of the biggest quandaries parents of school-age children face each year is what to do with the kids during the summer.
When their children are too old for daycare and too young to stay home alone, working parents need options while school is on hiatus. Even parents who don’t need child care sign their kids up for camps and activities to prevent their brains from rotting and to stave off lethargy. Summer is a good time to explore particular interests, hone skills, have new experie -
Marc Richardson: Has information overload made us callous?
I’ve drawn a blank this week. Well, at least, I thought I had drawn a blank. There’s plenty going on in Montreal and beyond, yet none of it inspired a moment where I thought: “That’s what I’m going to write about.”
It wasn’t a question of having writer’s block, either, because I could have written about many a topic: Donald Trump being a sleeper KGB agent — potentially, of course; the need to rethink the two-week vacation system given what em -
Man, 20, attacked early Sunday outside Laval gas station
A 20-year-old male was the victim of an armed assault early Sunday morning during an altercation involving four people outside a gas station at Curé-Labelle and Samson Blvds. in the Chomedey district of Laval.
The victim underwent surgery for injuries to his upper body with as-yet undetermined weapons, but his life is not believed to be in danger, said Laval police.
An 18-year-old suspect was arrested following the altercation; the two other suspects are still at large.

Body recovered of man who drowned near Abitibi campsite
This year’s National Drowning Prevention Week ended as it started: tragically.
The body of a 67-year-old man who drowned Saturday evening in a lake at a campground in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region was recovered Sunday at about 5:45 p.m. by Sûreté du Québec divers.
According to SQ reports, the man, who was from La Sarre, was swimming on Saturday evening at about 8 p.m. when he suddenly sank. Witnesses tried in vain to rescue him.
