Canadiens are stocking up on former first-round NHL draft picks
What do right-winger Joel Armia and defenceman Simon Desprès have in common?
Well, they both recently joined the Canadiens and they are both former first-round NHL draft picks.
The Canadiens acquired Armia last month in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets and on Friday signed the restricted free agent to a one-year contract worth US$1.85 million. On Thursday, the Canadiens announced they have invited Desprès to training camp on a professional tryout.

Quebec farmers are hoping for rain in coming days
After a peculiarly dry June, farmers are hoping for rain as soon as possible since almost all regions in Quebec are lacking water, according to Marcel Groleau, the president of the Union des producteurs agricoles.
In a phone interview with the Presse Canadienne on Friday, Groleau said that he didn’t know a region “where everything is good” at this moment.
In certain regions the situation is critical, notably in Lanaudière and the south of Quebec, Groleau said. -

What's the most important lesson Canadiens' Marc Bergevin has learned?
Marc Bergevin is heading into Year 7 as general manager of the Canadiens and the team has missed the playoffs in two of the last three years and finished 28th in the overall NHL standings last season.
Obviously, Bergevin has made quite a few mistakes along the way. But with four years remaining on the contract extension that team owner/president Geoff Molson gave him in November 2015, Bergevin’s job does not appear to be in jeopardy. The Canadiens made the playoffs in each of Bergevin&rsqu -

Karl Lohnes: Cooler colour tones are ideal for summer decor
Cool colours like blue, green and grey are on-trend, but many people hesitate to use them, afraid they will make a room feel too cold. Yet there are many visual, psychological and physiological advantages to decorating with cooler colours. Not only do they visually cool down our homes on a hot summer’s day, but they help slow down breathing, reduce anxiety, lower body temperature and create a relaxed state of mind.
Blue, in its many forms, is one of the most popular colours, yet not many p -

Montreal’s Au Pied de Cochon has yet another accolade to its name.
American luxury magazine Robb Report included the Duluth St. restaurant in its recent compilation of the 30 most influential restaurants of the last 30 years.
The list was reportedly compiled on the basis of discussions with “the world’s leading chefs and restaurateurs” about establishments they think have changed the dining scene.
“Martin Picard has taken gluttony and decadence to a new level. Rare -

Watch: Gathering at the Kahnawake Pow Wow
The annual Kahnawake Pow Wow is being held this weekend.
The event began as a way to honour the Mohawk resistance to the Canadian Forces during the 1990 Oka Crisis.
The Pow Wow also celebrates Indigenous culture and brings together people from Montreal and its suburbs with their Mohawk neighbours. It welcomes First Nations from across North America for a weekend of dancing, home cooking and fun.
Last summer, Christopher Curtis and Catherine Mathys attended the Pow Wow as part of their Two Solitu -

The shift to electric cars: Are we there yet?
Driven by a love for his planet and a concern for his pocketbook, George Giannelis made the switch to an all-electric vehicle last summer.
“Best car I ever had,” he says, with the gentle fervour of the recently converted. “For somebody who comes from driving a regular car, it’s a whole new driving experience, because you don’t have the vibrations, you only have the wheels rolling on the pavement. So if you close your windows, you don’t hear anything. It’ -
Shelter: Sherbrooke St. condo with a yoga salon and a view
By the time he was 10 years old, Paul Terni could speak five languages — English, French, Arabic, Armenian and Italian. He came by his linguistic skills — impressive in one so young — because of his upbringing in Alexandria, Egypt. His father was Italian. His mother came from an Armenian family. Terni was schooled in the British educational system and French was the language spoken at home.
According to Terni, his father had “done very well for himself.” Before the -
Korf: Best and worst of summer
I am on holiday for much of July and fortunate to be out-of-town and by the beach during the dog days of July, particularly this year with the mercury hitting record highs.
It is, however, one of the best times of the year to enjoy the city and I am sorry to miss many of the festivities like Just for Laughs. I plan to make the most of August by catching the last of the fireworks, visiting the Picasso exhibit, trying some salsa dancing in Baie-D’Urfé and, of course, taking part in th -

Josh Freed: This customer service call was frustrating — but I later learned it wasn't what I thought
I just had an iAdventure you definitely want to avoid.
So please stay on the line, for your future calling comfort.
I’d ordered a new iPhone from Fido, which arrived by courier with a polished gleam. But it didn’t act polished after I’d spent hours setting it up.
It kept ringing twice then hanging up, over and over, day and might. Strangely, the caller number never displayed and wasn’t in my call history.
Was this a glitch, a prank or a ghost in my phone? Whatever, it was -

This was the second major fire of the day in downtown Montreal, after an earlier fire at the Bell Media tower on McGill College Ave.

Federal judge sides with tiny frog, rules against Quebec developer
It’s the size of your fingertip, but this tiny frog has some big legal protection.
In late June, a Federal Court judge ruled that the federal government had the right to issue an emergency protection order — which shrunk a development already under construction in La Prairie — to protect the breeding grounds of the western chorus frog.
The frog, which averages around 2.5 cm long, is one of the smallest frogs that lives in Quebec. While it’s not an endangered species globa -
Three hospitalized after five-alarm fire at Bell Media tower on McGill College Ave.
Three people were taken to a hospital after a five-alarm fire on the roof of the Bell Media tower at 1800 McGill College Ave.
Authorities do not fear for their lives. Two people had been working on the roof, as well as one person who had been working in an office nearby, according to Urgences-santé.

A cyclists’ advocacy group is calling on the city of Montreal to improve safety at the intersection where a cyclist died last month, in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie borough.

Watch: St-Laurent pedicab program combats social isolation of seniors
The borough of St-Laurent is using pedicabs to combat the social isolation of seniors.
For the second year running, free rides of up to an hour are available to residents who are 55 or older.
The borough’s two pedicabs are pedalled by students, who receive summer employment and a student grant for their efforts.
