A renaissance in rental construction is projected to add tens of thousands of new apartment units in the Montreal area during the next few years, and they’re not your typical cheap urban flats.
The new building trend is for higher-end — and in some cases, luxury — rentals, designed to appeal to up-and-coming young professionals and downsizing baby boomers. Many of these new projects also aren’t in the city, but in suburban areas like the South Shore.

Romeo meets her Juliet in Repercussion’s same-sex version
The star-crossed lovers get the cross-gender treatment in the latest production from Shakespeare-in-the-Park specialists Repercussion Theatre, now into their 30th season. Their Romeo and Juliet, which opened on Thursday and tours around Montreal (and beyond) to Aug. 8, sees Shauna Thompson playing the lovelorn swain to Michelle Rambharose’s Juliet.
It shouldn’t be a complete shock to the system, given the long Shakespearean tradition of mixing it up gender-wise, whether it be Elizabe -
Three face charges in connection with Ministry of Justice contracts
Two former public servants and the head of an information technology (IT) firm face charges in connection with contracts awarded by the Quebec Ministry of Justice between 2000 and 2014.
Investigators from the Unité permanente anticorruption (UPAC) arrested Christian Tessier, former director of client services and technology at the ministry, in Montreal Thursday morning. Sylvain Tremblay, the administrator of a firm that provided IT services to the ministry, was arrested in Quebec Cit -
Shea Weber's knee surgery raises questions about Canadiens
There will no doubt be plenty of questions about the Canadiens’ medical staff following Thursday’s news that defenceman Shea Weber had surgery on his right knee on June 19 and will now be sidelined until at least mid-December.
Weber, who will turn 33 on Aug. 14, already had surgery in March to repair tendons in his left foot. Weber suffered a fracture in his left foot when he was hit with a shot during the first game of the season, but played 26 games before his year came to an end w -
Jean-Talon Market merchants decry plan for public square in parking lot
A longtime merchant at the Jean-Talon Market said he will have to close up shop if the city goes ahead with a plan to remove parking spots to build a public square.
The city announced a plan last month to permanently close Shamrock Ave. to cars and make it a place for people to walk and sit, with several seating areas, a picnic area and newly planted trees and plants. Construction on the project began last month and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
However, merchants are miffe -

Restaurant review: Some but not all of Le Petit Italien's charms restored
There is a certain kind of restaurant that almost inevitably thrives because it checks off so many boxes. Mid-priced? Check. Terrasse? Check. Neighbourhood place? Check. Terrific location? Check. And finally, I’d say, casual French bistro or classic Italian? Check and check. The chances for success rise with every such asset. If you have two or more, you basically have it made. If you have them all, you should have it made in the shade.
Outremont’s Le Petit Italien is a restaurant wi -

Canadiens' Shea Weber out until mid-December after knee surgery
The Canadiens provided a medical update on Shea Weber Thursday and it’s not good news.
In fact, it’s terrible news for a team that finished 28th in the overall NHL standings last season when the No. 1 defenceman only played 26 games due to injuries.
The Canadiens announced that Weber had arthroscopic surgery last month to repair a meniscal tear in his right knee and the veteran defenceman’s recovery period is expected to be six months. Weber also had surgery in March to repair -
P.K. Subban and girlfriend Lindsey Vonn ask: Who wore it better?
When it comes to social media, there are few athletes who do it better than P.K. Subban and Lindsey Vonn.
Now that the Nashville Predators defenceman and the U.S. ski star are dating, it’s a double-whammy.
Subban and Vonn are vacationing together in Italy and celebrated Wednesday’s July 4 Independence Day holiday back in the U.S. by posing in matching (or the same?) red-and-white striped bathing suits with “USA” on the front and P.K. asking on Twitter: “Who wore it -
Checking In: Anndore House is a laid-back haven in downtown Toronto
The Anndore House in Toronto is an amazing find. It’s lightly luxe, loaded with character, brilliantly located and moderately priced, relative to its big-banner neighbours.
A total regeneration of a mid-20th-century building, this quirky, retro boutique hotel is a new insiders’ getaway with a laid-back, residential air. It’s on a leafy street where you awaken to birds singing. That’s almost a miracle one block from the frenetic corner of Yonge and Bloor Sts. near the asto -

Construction magnate Antonio (Tony) Accurso has been sentenced to a four-year prison term for his role in Laval’s system of collusion when it came to awarding municipal contracts.

Allison Hanes: Soaking up the World Cup in a hockey town
Summer has finally arrived and Montreal is in the middle of a heat wave, but I’m tethered to the television.
It’s the middle of the World Cup, which only comes around every four years, and it’s getting down to the wire. After 32 teams were whittled down to 16 for the knockout round, we’re now on the verge of the quarter-finals. Is your team still in the competition?
That’s the thing about Montreal. Canada doesn’t have a horse in this race, so when it come -

Jeff Mathews is the next man up on Alouettes' quarterback carousel
The backup quarterback often is the most-popular guy on a team — especially when he comes off the bench in the second half and preserves a victory.
Jeff Mathews has experienced mixed results during his Canadian Football League career, which has included stops in Hamilton and Toronto. But he was methodically effective in the second half last Saturday at Saskatchewan.
With the Als clinging to a 13-6 third-quarter lead, Mathews replaced the injured Drew Willy immediately following an intercep -

The Montreal International Jazz Festival, after more than a week of heated controversy, has cancelled the remaining performances of SLĀV, “a theatrical odyssey based on slave songs,” by director Robert Lepage, his company Ex Machina and singer Betty Bonifassi.
Lepage’s show has been accused of cultural appropriation and cultural insensitivity.
