Demolition of the paddocks at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve began Tuesday — the first step of a $60-million rebuild that Formula One organizers say will be ready in time for next year’s Grand Prix.
“It’s the start of a new era,” said Grand Prix CEO François Dumontier, adding that the new building replacing the aging paddocks would enhance Montreal’s international image.
The Quebec government is contributing $18 million while the city of Montreal is footing

Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin will again have leftover salary cap money
If you are one of those fans who was upset last season because general manager Marc Bergevin started the season with $8 million in cap space, be prepared to be outraged again.
The Canadiens have signed 24 players — one above the opening-day roster limit — and they are still nearly $13 million under the cap.
Bergevin will use some of that money to sign three restricted free agents — Philip Danault, Jacob De La Rose and newly acquired Joel Armia — but even if he is super ge -

Victor Schukov: Take a tour of history in Le Suroît
With the Canadian dollar at a low and the U.S. a pretty expensive side trip, West Islanders don’t have to go far to get away for a brief and inexpensive summer excursion. It all comes with a warm southwesterly breeze called Le Suroît (literally translated as Sou’ester.) There are many historical, natural and culinary treats to discover in the Suroît region (and just a titch beyond), which consists of the off-island’s St-Lazare, Vaudreuil-Dorion and Île Perrot. -
Celine Cooper: Why do Quebecers put up with July 1 moving day hell?
Call it an inconvenient custom, one that Quebecers should toss to the curb.
I’m talking about the July 1 moving day in Quebec.
You know what what I mean, particularly here in Montreal. Mountains of rotting garbage and discarded junk on the sidewalks. Bottlenecks on narrow streets as moving vans and trucks jostle awkwardly for space, particularly in high-density neighbourhoods like the Plateau or downtown. Movers, up since dawn, some of them on their second, third or sometimes even fourth j -

Montreal actor Paul Cagelet has been sentenced to a 15-month prison term for having amassed a large collection of child pornography.

Appealing to vanity: Quebec finally ready for personalized licence plates
The Quebec government is poised to announce Tuesday afternoon that after a four-year delay, the province is finally ready to allow drivers to purchase a vanity plate for their car, truck or motorcycle.
The idea was first broached by then Quebec transport minister Sylvain Gaudreault in January 2014 and was expected to be in place by 2015.
However once the dust had settled in that year’s general election in April, the only thing in place in 2015 was a Liberal government that didn’t see -
Traffic-easing measures aren't bringing Mercier Bridge commuters much relief
Motorists crossing the Mercier Bridge Tuesday morning noticed little difference to the traffic jams they encountered on the span last week despite attempts by authorities to ease congestion.

Jazz fest picks for July 3: Jessie Reyez brings star power to free blowout
Indoors:
Preservation Hall Jazz Band (7 p.m., Maison Symphonique de Montréal, $51.90 to $69.40). It’s becoming almost an annual rendezvous. Montreal already has something of the French-infused festive spirit of New Orleans, so it only makes sense that the Big Easy’s most fabled jazz ensemble has found a home away from home at our city’s annual jazz celebration. From Dixieland and ragtime to funk and soul, these guys know how to have a good time. With rising British jazz -
Canadiens 2017 draft pick Cayden Primeau proving to be a hidden gem
The 2017 NHL Entry Draft was winding down at the United Center in Chicago when the Canadiens announced that they had made a trade to acquire the Philadelphia Flyers’ seventh-round pick.
It was one of those so-what moments. Seventh-round picks are long shots to earn employment in the NHL, but this pick was intriguing because Cayden Primeau was the son of former NHL player Keith Primeau and, while his father was a rugged centre for 15 seasons before a concussion ended his career, the younger -
Allison Hanes: We're all together in the loneliness epidemic
Dying alone is a commonly held fear, but it has perhaps never been more justified than it is today.
This is the very sad fate that befell Philippe Champagne, a 72-year-old Montreal resident. The Montreal Gazette’s Jesse Feith recently recounted how this virtually invisible senior was discovered in April 2017 when neighbours were drawn to his studio apartment by a putrid stench. His remains were found on the bathroom floor, but Champagne had died so long beforehand — perhaps as much a -
Bergevin will again have leftover money
If you are one of those fans who was upset last season because general manager Marc Bergevin started the season with $8 million in cap space, be prepared to be outraged again.
The Canadiens have signed 24 players — one above the opening-day roster limit — and they are still nearly $13 million under the cap.
Bergevin will use some of that money to sign three restricted free agents — Philip Danault, Jacob de la Rose and newly acquired Joel Armia — but even if he is super ge -

Video: Montreal’s community gardens teach locals to grow for themselves
The Depot Community Food Centre in NDG has offered support to the community’s most vulnerable with emergency food baskets for more than 30 years. It has grown in that time to offer programs that address the root causes of hunger and poverty.
Those programs include community gardens in which locals grow their own produce and learn tips from experts, and satellite markets in low-income areas where produce harvested from the Depot’s urban farm is sold at affordable prices.

Tomas Plekanec thrilled to be back with the Canadiens
After the Canadiens dealt Tomas Plekanec to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the NHL trade deadline in February, the veteran centre made it very clear he wanted to return to Montreal as a free agent after the season.
That’s exactly what happened Sunday when Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin signed the 35-year-old to a one-year contract worth US$2.25 million and the possibility of earning another $1.25 million in bonuses. It’s a big pay cut from the $6 million Plekanec earned in each -
