DALLAS — NHL teams were ploughing their way through the fourth round of the NHL draft Saturday when the rumour started.
First, there was a tweet big news was coming from the Canadiens.
Then, there was a report Montreal captain Max Pacioretty was on his way to the San Jose Sharks.
The commentators on the NHL Network picked it up and batted it around. And, in less than 30 minutes after the rumour started, everyone agreed there was nothing to the story.

Canadiens conclude NHL draft with a flurry of smallish centres
DALLAS — The Canadiens went all-in at centre at the 2018 NHL entry draft, but it will be at least a year before the picks pay a dividend at the NHL level.
The prize is Jesperi Kotkaniemi and the Habs went out on the limb to pick him with the third overall pick Friday.
“We hope Kotkaniemi plays in the NHL soon, but that’s something that will sort itself out at training camp,” said assistant general manager Trevor Timmins. “We’re in this for the long haul and th -
Holiday SAQ strike averted as results of vote will not be known until Monday
The strike threat posed by SAQ employees on the busy Fête nationale weekend fizzled as the union failed to compile its members’ votes in time.
The 5,500 employees of the roughly 400 branches of the Société des alcools du Québec recently voted on whether or not to strike for six days.
On Saturday, the vote count was not yet completed.
Last week, Katia Lelièvre, president of the Syndicat des employés de magasins et de bureaux de la SAQ, spoke of the p -
Parents of baby who died after being left in a car all day won't be questioned by police until next week
Montreal police will not question the parents of a baby who died after being left in a car all day until they have overcome their initial shock.
“There’s no point in speaking with them at this time,” police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said.
The six-month-old died in downtown Montreal after being left in a car in the hot sun all day Friday.
According to police, the infant’s father forgot the baby in his car instead of dropping the child off at a daycare ce -
Justin Trudeau is in Quebec for Fête nationale celebrations
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began a two-day tour of Quebec on Saturday to participate in Fête nationale celebrations.
He began his visit in Drummondville, where he went to a public market with his sons Xavier and Hadrien.
Trudeau then went to the Village Québécois d’Antan, before going to his riding in Montreal to take part in festivities later in the day.
The prime minister will not be the only federal politician to celebrate Fête nationale in the province.

Canadiens take Jesse Ylönen with their first pick in second round
The NHL Draft continued Saturday morning in Dallas after the first round was held Friday night.
After selecting Finnish centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi with the No. 3 overall pick in the first round Friday night, the Canadiens took another Finn, right-winger Jesse Ylönen, with their first of three picks in the second round (35th overall) Saturday morning. The 6-foot, 167-pound Ylönen was ranked 28th among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting after posting 14-13-27 totals in 48 games -

Stu Cowan: Canadiens GM looks to future by drafting Jesperi Kotkaniemi
With his job possibly on the line heading into next season, Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin decided to look ahead to the future more than the present at Friday night’s NHL Draft in Dallas.
The GM should be applauded for that after selecting Finnish centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi with the third overall pick. Time will tell whether Bergevin made the right choice and whether he will still be GM of the Canadiens by the time Kotkaniemi has a chance to make his mark on the team, which ha -
Number of forest fires caused by humans higher than average this season
Since the beginning of the season, there has been an upward trend in human-caused fires compared to the average of the last 10 years, according to the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU).
Since April, 250 fires have burned 2,800 hectares of forest, and 97 per cent of them were caused by humans.
As the summer holidays begin, SOPFEU calls for caution among campers. Each year, about 50 fires occur due to a campfire that is not properly extinguished or left un -
McCord exhibit highlights artistry of fashion designer Balenciaga
You don’t expect X-rays in a fashion exhibition — but the current Balenciaga show at the McCord Museum is no ordinary exhibition. A rare opportunity to observe the work and inspiration of the legendary Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895-1972), the show draws on everything from sketches, photographs and fabric swatches to prototype garments and X-rays that reveal the inside of some of his dresses and the skill that went into making them.

Quebec landlords more worried than ever about cannabis legalization
Landlords in Quebec are more worried than ever about cannabis legalization.
According to a survey conducted this month by the Corporation des propriétaires immobiliers du Québec (CORPIQ), 85 per cent of landlords are worried about the impacts that legalization will have on managing their rental properties.
This is a sharp increase of 11 percentage points since they were asked the same question in January 2017. At that time, when the federal bill had not yet been unveiled, 73.5 -
Roads under increased surveillance between Fête nationale and Canada Day
The Sûreté du Québec will intensify its operations on roads from Fête nationale until Canada Day.
Last year, during the same period, nine people lost their lives on roads served by the SQ, and another 529 were injured.
It was an improvement, however, compared to 2016, when 14 people were killed in road accidents and another 634 were injured.
Patrollers will be watching for impaired driving, speeding, seatbelt use and cell phone use while driving.

The cone of silence has been lifted for Bruce Hills. Opinion: Five years after rail tragedy, Lac-Mégantic rebuilds
Building a city does not consist solely of erecting buildings. That’s the easy part. Building cities requires first and foremost the creation of a culture and mindset: the creation of a common vision that unites citizens, investors and promoters in achieving a shared objective.
On July 6, Lac-Mégantic will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the train derailment that destroyed the downtown area. The accident left deep scars, many of which are still healing.
The process of healing a -
Schukov: An idiot’s guide to the World Cup
Every four years, 374 countries qualify for soccer’s World Cup except Canada because we are too busy watching Coronation Street. Soccer — for the information of those who don’t care — is played on a field that is 12 kilometres long. That’s why a breakaway takes three hours.
The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal. In this respect, it is like hockey without the bloodshed. Since all games end in 0-0, they are decided by a shoot-ou -
Intersections feared most by Montreal cyclists located on bike paths
The intersections considered by cyclists to be the most dangerous in Montreal are located on some of its most popular bike paths, which were meant to alleviate fears, a new survey suggests.
Included among the worst are the corner where the de Maisonneuve bike path intersects with Berri St., the confluence of Park and Pine Aves., and most of the intersections located along the Rachel St. bike path, one of the busiest in the city.
“It is notable that the most dangerous intersections identifi -
Gilles Vigneault's powerful dream of un pays
Mon cher Gilles, c’est à ton tour de te laisser parler d’amour …
Writing his own answer to Happy Birthday, Gilles Vigneault came up with a classic destined to be sung every time someone blows out the candles in Quebec. As it happens, when Oct. 27 rolls around, Vigneault himself will try to extinguish 90 of them.
But Gens du pays, first performed in public 43 Fête nationale weekends ago, soon became more than a song to sing before the cake gets passed around or the -
Quebec poll of anglo-franco ties finds conflict and consensus
There’s a paradox buried in a recent survey on the relationship between Quebec’s anglophone and francophone communities.
Only 12 per cent of anglos who say they’re “very attached” to Quebec have a negative view of francophones. Whereas francophones who have strong attachment to Quebec tend to view anglophones in a more negative light. Thirty per cent of francophones who say they’re “very attached to Quebec” have an unfavourable view of anglophones. -
Kanesatake entrepreneur sets sights on Indigenous cannabis empire
If Blake Freeman wanted a showdown with Canada’s cannabis giants, he’d be badly outgunned.
As it stands, the legal cannabis industry is dominated by four companies whose combined market cap floats somewhere around $15 billion.
They wield enough lobbyists to shape federal policy. Their shares trade daily on the Toronto Stock Exchange alongside stocks for General Motors, Suncor Energy and other staples of the Canadian economy.
The largest among them, Canopy Growth, has a federal licenc -
Canadiens plug hole, selecting Finn Jesperi Kotkaniemi No. 3 overall at NHL draft
DALLAS — The Canadiens moved to plug the gaping hole in the middle of their lineup Friday by drafting centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi with the third overall pick in the NHL entry draft.
A month ago, the selection would have been a major surprise. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Kotkaniemi was ranked sixth among European skaters by the Central Scouting Service and most draft analysts predicted he would be selected in the middle of the first round.
But his stock rose with a strong performance in the -
Alouettes drubbed by Winnipeg 56-10 in their home opener
The Alouettes seemingly have one hope this year to be respectable and competitive. They must be led by the defence. Otherwise, it’s going to be a long season.
The defence faltered mightily Friday night in Montreal’s regular-season home opener. The Als were eviscerated, 56-10, by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before 19,498 Molson Stadium spectators.
Montreal now is 0-2 this season and has lost 13 consecutive games dating back to Aug. 19, equalling the mark for the longest losing streak in -
Herb Zurkowsky: Embarrassing loss in home opener leaves little hope for Alouettes turnaround
If the Alouettes, an organization struggling to find its place in the Montreal sports landscape, got lucky, nobody was paying attention to this embarrassment, fans instead concentrating on the Canadiens and Friday night’s NHL draft.
New head coach Mike Sherman undoubtedly realized the Als were in a rebuilding mode and hadn’t made the Canadian Football League playoffs for three seasons when he was lured out of semi-retirement last December. But it’s unlikely even Sherman realize -
