Group stages protest to save green space in Plateau Mont Royal
It might appear as a postage stamp on a map of Plateau-Mont-Royal, but to many people in the neighbourhood surrounding it Notman garden is a big deal.
It is barely noticeable to passersby, but the tiny green space at the corner of Milton and Clark Sts. has withstood the test of time despite being a literal stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of the intersection of St-Laurent Blvd. and Sherbrooke St. A group trying to preserve the space (the Citizens Movement for the Preserva -

Under $18: Everyday drinking
Luberon 2016, La Vieille Ferme, France white, $13, SAQ # 298505. Once again, a study in nuance and texture. This wine could not be further removed from the hyper-acidic, super-aromatic whites that are all the rage these days. This is about pear and peaches, a solid mineral streak and a rich, comforting finish. Serve this on the warmer side, or you simply won’t get what I am talking about. Residual sugar: 1.2 g/L. Grape varieties: bourboulenc, grenache blan -

Crisis on campus: Universities struggle with students in distress
One Monday morning in March, a lonely and homesick 19-year-old undergrad took his own life in residence at the University of Waterloo, Ont.
“I can’t believe this is real,” his 16-year-old brother wrote the next day in an agitated social media post filled with grievances against the school.
“My brother is gone and I’ll never be able to tell him I love him ever again.”
As the post grimly noted, his brother was the second “brilliant min -
What Marc Bergevin can learn from the Predators success story
There are thousands of Montrealers who are pumped that the Nashville Predators are in the Stanley Cup final.
But I’d bet any amount of money that Marc Bergevin is not one of them. In fact, you can safely assume that the snappily-attired Canadiens general manager couldn’t be less pleased to see the Preds four games away from potentially lifting Lord Stanley’s cherished chalice.
No this isn’t yet another column rating the P.K. Subban/Shea Weber trade. That horse has le -

Shelter: Fitness expert exercises restraint in Plateau condo
Jason Boivin grew up on the West Island, but when it was time for him to go to McGill University, he moved into town.
During his student years, he lived in a number of Montreal neighbourhoods, including the McGill Ghetto and Mile End. Boivin graduated with a BA in Civil Engineering, but he ended up becoming a personal trainer at his alma mater, as well as running his own company — JB Fitness and Swimming — whose slogan, appropriately enough given his expertise, is “En -

Couillard: PQ-QS merger an attempt to manipulate voters
Plans to merge political parties, like the one mentioned by the Parti québécois and Québec solidaire, are all attempts to manipulate voters, according to Québec premier Philippe Couillard. “Every alliance scenario, in the end, it’s just smoke,” he said Monday in a press release on the subject of his trip in Israel. Josh Freed: Bill 101 badly hurt us, but it also accidentally saved Canada
Bill 101 — the most loaded term in the anglo-Quebec vocabulary, along with its cousin “referendum.”
Bill 101 turns 40 this summer, but few anglos will be singing Bonne Fête and many will mourn.
For decades the law aggravated, infuriated, exhausted and entertained us with its legal lunacies. Anglos resent and regret it, yet so do some sovereignists — because Bill 101 brought unpredictable consequences, even to those who created it.

From the archives: Governor-general's enthusiasm for Canadian culture gave a boost to what became the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
This story was first published on May 27, 2007, in the Montreal Gazette
“By eight o’clock, throngs of ladies and gentlemen, the elite of Montreal, came pouring in, the toilettes of many of the ladies being noticeable for their tasteful elegance.”
Gazette, Tuesday, May 27, 1879
It was one hot ticket among many that six-day stretch in Montreal. The governor-general, the marquess of Lorne, was paying an official visit to the city, and a highlight would come when he opened the new -
Centennial Academy may share space with EMSB until it finds a new home
Over the past six years, Angela Burgos has been concerned with a lot more than just providing quality education to her students at Centennial Academy – she has also been on the hunt for a new school building.
Since 1976, the private high school has been renting space from the Commission scolaire de Montréal on Prud’homme Ave. in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.
But their 40-year lease is now up and the French school board needs its buildings to deal with a severe overcrowding proble -

L’exemple à suivre
Marc Bergevin répète sans cesse qu’il est difficile, voire impossible, de réunir une équipe aspirante aux grands honneurs par le biais de tran-sactions.
