    Twenty-five years after he was imprisoned for killing two people in Langley City, William James McCotter remains a “moderate to high risk for violence,” a risk that is “not considered manageable in the community.”
    The words appear in a March 10 decision by a Parole Board of Canada Appeal Division which rejected McCotter’s claim that his human rights were violated when the board refused to approve his release from prison.

    A man has been convicted for the 2023 homicide of 42-year-old Jesse Kennedy in Mission.
    John Ross Powers was found guilty of second-degree murder in a decision at Abbotsford Law Courts on Friday (March 20).
    The conviction comes with a mandatory life sentence for Powers with no chance of parole for 10 to 25 years. Moving forward, Powers will have sentencing hearing to decide parole eligibility.
    His next appearance is slated for May 25 for a pre-sentence report.

  • Truck hits black ice, rolls over on Coquihalla Highway near Hope

    First responders attended a rollover crash on the Coquihalla Highway north of Hope on Monday (March 23).
    BC Highway Patrol said in a statement that a grey pickup lost control due to black ice patches on shady areas of the highway before it spun out and rolled over.
    Both the 67-year-old driver and 68-year-old passenger from Alberta sustained minor injuries in the crash and are expected to make a full recovery.

    First responders are attending a reported rollover crash on the Coquihalla Highway north of Hope on Monday (March 23).
    Drive BC said in a social media post that the vehicle reportedly spun out and rolled over into the ditch near Exit 192 (Sowaqua Creek Road) off Highway 5.

    The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake happened 261 kilometres west-southwest of Tofino, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

  • No injuries after small airplane makes hard landing at B.C. airport

    Update: 5 p.m.
    There were no injuries after an airplane made an emergency landing at the Vernon Airport Saturday afternoon.
    A privately registered twin-engine plane advised that it had a mechanical issue with the aircraft’s nose landing gear around 1:30 p.m. March 21, according to City of Vernon spokesperson Jessica Hewitt.
    As a safety precaution, emergency crews were dispatched to the airport for standby.
    The aircraft had one person aboard. It landed safely at 1:48 p.m., Hewitt said.
