  • Fire incident causes road closure in Surrey near 184 Street, Fraser Highway

    An ongoing fire incident has cause the closure of a road in Surrey.
    Surrey Police Service say 184 Street is closed northbound at Fraser Highway and southbound at 71 Avenue, while 70 Avenue westbound is closed at 184 Street.
    The closures are expected to be in place for at least the next three hours.
    SPS is encouraging the public to avoid the area and find alternate routes.

  • 1 woman, 23, dead after New Year’s Day crash in Surrey

    One woman has died after a New Year’s Day crash in Surrey.
    Surrey Police Service said Tuesday (Jan. 6) that one woman, 23, a passenger who suffered life-threatening injuries in the Jan. 1 collision between a tractor-trailer and two passenger vehicles, has died.
    The crash, which happened near the intersection of 32 Avenue and 194 Street, sent three people to hospital.
    SPS said the cause of the collision remains under investigation, but that impairment is believed to be a contributing factor

  • Snowmobiler died after collision with parked vehicle in B.C. park: RCMP

    Police have confirmed a few more details surrounding the death of a snowmobiler in Silver Star Provincial Park.
    The B.C. Coroners Service said last week it was investigating a death that occurred on Sunday Dec. 28.
    Around 12:45 p.m. that day, Vernon North Okanagan RCMP officers responded to the parking lot at Aberdeen Summit Road and Sovereign Lake Road for a report of a collision between a snowmobile and a parked vehicle, an RCMP spokesperson told The Morning Star.

    Jason McDaniel has been confirmed as ICBC’s president and CEO following an interim term.
    ICBC announced Tuesday (Jan. 6) that McDaniel is now officially in the role. He’d been serving as interim president and CEO since June 2025.

    The Kamloops RCMP is investigating the sudden death of a man in the city’s West End, and police are treating the death as a homicide.

  • Inmate assaulted at Mountain Institution in Agassiz

    An inmate at a medium-security institution in Agassiz has been assaulted.
    Correctional Service Canada (CSC) reported that multiple assailants allegedly assaulted an inmate at Mountain Institution on Dec. 31. Staff members evaluated the inmate and he was transported to outside hospital. The inmate has returned t o the institution as of the date of the CSC release on Jan. 6.
    The Agassiz RCMP and the CSC are investigating the incident. Multiple assailants were identified and action has been taken.
  • Abbotsford firefighters tackled a 7% increase in blazes

    2025 was a busy year for the city’s first responders, with members of the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) once again responding to more than 15,000 calls.
    According to the City of Abbotsford, the number of calls into the local fire department rose to 15,479, which is a small increase from the 15,427 calls in 2024.
    The portion of these calls that were active fires also increased in 2025, with 620 of the calls being blazes. This is a seven per cent increase from the previous year.

    A pair of snowmobilers stranded near Hope have been safely rescued thanks to them being prepared for outdoor emergencies.
    Hope Volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) were on scene on Monday afternoon (Jan. 5), near Murphy Lakes, after the snowmobilers’ machine slid over an embankment about 22 km down a service road.     Two major B.C. Interior highways are expecting a large amount of snowfall on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
