Ottawa police have charged an Ottawa man with weapons offences after he pulled out what initially appeared to be a handgun during an altercation in the Glebe.
Officers reported to a call early afternoon on Tuesday, about a man “in distress” and causing a disturbance. Police said the man was initially co-operative, but grew agitated and then pulled out an apparent handgun.
After a gunpoint arrest and an attempt to de-escalate the situation, police were able to get the suspect to

Reevely: Hard Rock needs casino expansion to pay province what it owes, it says
The Hard Rock casino in Ottawa needs more gambling tables because it owes the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. more money than 21 poker tables and roulette wheels can generate, the company’s publicist says.
Put another way, Hard Rock has to undermine Ottawa city council’s limits on gambling here to satisfy the demands of a provincial government agency. First with its current application to Ottawa’s committee of adjustment to up its limit on table games from 21 to 35, and eventu -
Money that colleges save during the faculty strike will go to students hurt by dispute, says Ontario minister
Ontario colleges will have to put all the money they are saving during the faculty strike into a fund to help students who are being hurt by it, says Deb Matthews, the minister for Advanced Education and Skills Development.
“Students have been in the middle of this strike for too long and it’s just not fair,” she said in a statement released Friday.
The strike by 12,000 professors, instructors, librarians and counsellors at Ontario colleges is nearing the end of its fourth week -
Algonquin and La Cite colleges cancel most of Christmas break to make up classes lost to faculty strike
Most of the Christmas break has been cancelled for students at Algonquin and La Cité colleges in Ottawa to make up coursework lost due to the province-wide faculty strike.
Students at both colleges will have about a week off at Christmas, with the remainder of the break used for classes, labs and clinical placements.
The fall term will extend into January, although it’s not known yet by how many weeks, said a statement by La Cité.
La Cité has also cancelled its Februar -
Gatineau man who defused live suicide bomber honoured in new book
When the call came in to Leading Seaman Bruno Guevremont that there was a suicide bomber in Kandahar, the navy bomb technician assumed he was being sent to pick up bits and pieces.
To Guevremont’s surprise, when his unit arrived, the bomber was still very much alive, pinned by the arms by two Afghan policemen, a belt of explosives strapped to his body, two detonator switches dangling from his hands.
There was no time to put on his heavy and cumbersome bomb suit — nor at that close di -

Battle of Rockcliffe Park: Is this house addition a blight on the stately community?
A proposed modern addition to a 90-year-old house overlooking McKay Lake in Rockcliffe Park has become the battleground for residents who fear city hall is being willy-nilly with the heritage character of their stately community.
Daniel Weinand, the prospective buyer of the Tudor Revival-style house on a bluff at 551 Fairview Ave., wants to build a two-storey addition made of stone, wood and glass. The proposal includes other changes to the property, such as moving the driveway, but it’s t -

Remembrance Day in the capital: Everything you need to know
The ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa organized by Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion is an Ottawa tradition to honour veterans and those who fell in service of Canada.
While there are events organized by branches across the city, tens of thousands come to the National War Memorial at the intersection of Elgin and Wellington streets.
Arrive early Saturday to get a good view although large screens are set up around the memorial to broadcast the ceremony, organizers say. R -

Gormley: Canadians risk closing themselves off to the world
Conservatives face some critical decisions in Western democracies, but none more important than whether or not they will observe and enforce basic human truths that must be self-evident even to themselves.

Traffic stop leads to seizure of handgun, marijuana charges
A 25-year-old Ottawa man faces a host of charges, including possession of a 9 mm handgun, following a traffic stop in the east end Thursday night.
Police said the man’s vehicle was pulled over at about 11 p.m. by patrol officers around St. Laurent Boulevard and Donald Street.
In the first interaction, an officer arrested the driver for possession of marijuana.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police allegedly found the handgun.

Punching, hitting, violence on the job routine, hospital workers say
It’s becoming routine for frontline hospital workers to be punched, kicked and have things thrown at them, according to research from the union that represents nurses, personal support workers and others across Ontario.
Many of those hospital workers say they are afraid to report assaults for fear of reprisal, according to a poll of workers.
Sometimes workplace violence has catastrophic results. This summer, an admitting clerk at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital was stabbed re -
Squirrel hunting may be coming to Quebec
Quebec may soon allow squirrel hunting, an entry-level type of hunting that is already legal in Ontario and most U.S. states.
A committee will make recommendations to the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks in a few months.
Quebec allows small-game hunting ranging from rabbits to foxes to pigeons, but excludes squirrels, which are not native to Quebec (or Eastern Ontario) and arrived only in the 1900s.
Hunters typically use lighter shotguns or .22-calibre rifles to hunt squirrels.

Harley Card CD reviewed
The Greatest Invention (self-released)
Harley Card
Ottawa-raised, Toronto-based guitarist Harley Card has been putting out albums as a leader at a measured pace. First there was his debut, Non Fiction, in 2008 — the same year he was a semi-finalist in the Montreux Jazz Festival Guitar Competition. Then came his follow-up in 2013, Hedgerow. I thought that Card made a lot of musical progress between his first and second albums, and I’d say he’s made another big leap, in par -
Capital Voices: A father and son's first parade together
To mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman met and photographed 150 people in the Ottawa area, encouraging them to tell their stories that, combined, painted an intimate portrait of the region and the people who live, work and play here. The series, which was published daily leading up to Canada Day, was called Capital Voices. It continues on a somewhat less rigorously defined schedule.

Dawson: The slippery slope of self-deputized health care
When night falls this evening, there will be no safe injection site in Lowertown’s Raphael Brunet park. It won’t be the first time; inclement weather has forced it to close before. But now, it’s final. Thursday evening was the last hurrah.
This harm reduction site was a new sort of facility, if a tent can be called that: health-care-by-freebooters, offering services that government had shuffled, instead of sprinted, towards delivering. “It is shameful that so many individ -

They give the fellows as nice a funeral as possible but it will be so wonderful to be home again and to get away from the feeling that around each corner, someone wants to take a -

Everyday Heroes: Mitic book honours Canadian veterans
When the call came in to Leading Seaman Bruno Guevremont that there was a suicide bomber in Kandahar, the navy bomb technician assumed he was being sent to pick up bits and pieces.
To Guevremont’s surprise, when his unit arrived, the bomber was still very much alive, pinned by the arms by two Afghan policemen, a belt of explosives strapped to his body, two detonator switches dangling from his hands.
There was no time to put on his heavy and cumbersome bomb suit — nor at that close di -

Overnight fires at west-end house and home of Gatineau radio station
Firefighters on both sides of the river were hopping early Friday with a house fire in Ottawa’s Wellington West neighbourhood and a blaze in a commercial building that houses a local radio station in Gatineau.
Ottawa firefighters were called to 14 Gould St. just after midnight when a 911 caller reported spotting smoke and flames.
Given high winds, extra resources were immediately dispatched, and the first on the scene declared a working fire and began an “aggressive” attack.

MacDougall: The reasons I've come to hate the news
I hate the news.
A weird thing for a columnist to cop to in a newspaper, to be sure, but since going back to work full-time after a year and a half of daddy day care and freelance writing, I’ve come to hate the news. It’s become ungovernable.
Every time I peek into my Twitter feed — still my default vein — there are now hundreds (if not thousands) of new posts, many of which appear wildly out of (chronological) sequence.
I don’t know what’s coming or going. My -

A kitchen that just looks custom – Local firm Swedish Door hacks IKEA for you
A 30-something Ottawa couple, one in high-tech and the other a doctor, wanted a new kitchen that didn’t look big box, but didn’t break the bank, either.
Enter designer Kim Teron, who called on Swedish Door. It took her clients “less than 15 seconds” to choose the year-old local company’s white and fossil gray shaker fronts to go on Ikea cabinets. The cost difference over all-Ikea was only about $3,500 more.
“It brings it up to a custom level without -

Stolen vehicle with baby on board in Gatineau recovered after 20 minutes
A mother spent a terrified 15-20 minutes in Pointe Gatineau Thursday night when her vehicle was stolen with her baby on board.
The baby was found safe inside the vehicle about 20 minutes later.
The jacking occurred when the mother stopped at a convenience store at Saint-Rosaire Street and Chemin de la Savane at about 7:45 p.m.
As she reached into the car to remove her child, she was pulled onto the street and the thief jumped into the vehicle.
The mother called police who issued an all-points a -
The internet's favourite alpaca herd finds a new home
After two weeks of uncertainty about their futures, the alpacas that Ottawa-area hobby farmer Mike Caldwell posted on Kijiji for $250 have found a good home.
Five of the six — Llucy, Stormy, J-Lo, Rocky and Snowflake — are now in the care of Ruth Vanderlaan, who operates a petting zoo on her farm in Winchester Springs, a little less than an hour’s drive south of Ottawa.
Unfortunately, the sixth, Vinny, of an indeterminate age but by far the herd’s elder statesalpaca, didn -
