Paul Catherall designs modernist matchboxes
via ianvisits.co.ukThis is rather fun, you can now buy matchboxes decorated with modernist architecture on the boxes.
(c) Blue Crow Media
The collection, featuring illustrations by Paul Catherall, begins with London’s Trellick Tower and Barbican Estate, with more architectural masterpieces illustrated by Catherall to follow soon.
As matchboxes go, they’re hardly the cheapest way of lighting a birthday candle, but as gifts for a modernist architectural fan — they’re bound to raise a smile at -
Marylebone Makeover: Rain gardens to flourish in former pedestrian subway
via ianvisits.co.ukOne of London’s biggest sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) is about to be built in the derelict pedestrian subway under the Marylebone flyover. The subway, once seen as the future to divert annoying pedestrians away from the important motorists, spent most of its life as a hangout for the homeless — although later named after Joe Strummer, a musician of some note who once busked here, it finally closed in 2018.

Duke of Wellington’s dress uniforms go on display at Apsley House
via ianvisits.co.ukThe Duke of Wellington is famous for the vast number of portraits of him in his military uniforms, but the actual uniforms themselves were hardly ever seen in public – until now.Five of his formal dress uniforms have gone on display in his London home. Two haven’t been on display for about 50 years, and three have never been seen in public before. So, for most people, it’s pretty much the first time that they’ve been able to see any of the five dress uniforms on show insi -
By law – it shouldn’t be Easter this weekend
via ianvisits.co.ukEach year, people check their calendars to find out when Easter will take place because it changes every year — but nearly a century ago, the UK passed a law fixing the date. It’s just that the law has never been enforced.Despite the fact that nailing a person to a cross and killing them is the sort of thing that tends to happen on a fixed day, the Easter holiday to mark “Killing Jesus Day” has wobbled around the calendar like a drunkard trying to get home.

From dusty bin to rail freight as passenger train removes lorries from London’s roads
via ianvisits.co.ukA passenger train without any seats recently called at Liverpool Street. It’s not a trial of a new standing-only train, but a way of delivering cargo freight into city centres.
Inside the gutted train (c) ianVisits
Delivering freight into towns by rail isn’t new – in fact, until the rise of the motor vehicle and later containerisation of cargo, almost every railway station had freight sidings next to them. However, most freight on rail today is in sealed containers, and vans of -

From Tiny Tradesmen to Lilliputian Locals: Exploring “staffage” in architectural drawings
via ianvisits.co.ukMost architectural exhibitions are about the buildings, but this one isn’t — it’s about the figures added to architectural drawings to show off the scale of the buildings. These little figures, known as staffage, are sometimes simply decorative, sometimes used to show how a space might be used, or sometimes, deceptions to make buildings look bigger than they are. Although staffage has been used since mankind started creating art, it was the Georgian era that saw it take off as a -
