This report presents the methods and findings of the Licensed Child Care Demand and Affordability Study commissioned by the City of Toronto. The challenges of how to set appropriate targets for growing Toronto's licensed child care system, and what policies will best support that growth are not easy to solve. The Licensed Child Care Demand and Affordability Study provides information that can help the City of Toronto begin to navigate these planning challenges.
A new poll among parents in the U.S. with children in child care was conducted by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to examine parents’ selection of and experiences with child care. The poll included parents of a child cared for regularly by someone other than a parent, including a relative, a non-relative (e.g., a family or home daycare, a nanny, or a babysitter), or a center (e.g., a daycare or preschool). If nothing is done to address Toronto’s ruinously high cost of daycare, there is no point in adding many more spaces, a ground-breaking city report warns.
Three-quarters of city families can’t afford licensed child care, according to the report, the first of its kind to quantify parent demand and affordability.
It's a first for the University of Saskatchewan.
The U of S is celebrating the completion of the university's first stand-alone childcare centre located across the street from the campus.
The chair of the university's childcare expansion committee and vice-provost of teaching and learning said that the new childcare spaces will help students reach their goals.
"We know that access to childcare can be a real challenge for student-parents," said Patti McDougall.
It boggles Colleen Schmidt’s mind that her little non-profit daycare is taxed on the same level as Walmart.
That’s now the case with Cathedral Area Cooperative Daycare, where Schmidt is board president.
Located in a century-old house in Cathedral, the daycare’s taxes doubled last fall after a City of Regina property reassessment. This daycare, as well as four others, had been paying residential taxes.
When Jolie Ritzo was looking for day care for her son Cannon in Falmouth, Maine, she checked out as many centers as she could.
She was looking for a place with the right feel.
"Most importantly, the people who are providing the care are loving and kind, nurturing and interested in developing these little beings," she says.
There was one center in town that had a great reputation, but it was so pricey, Ritzo says, "It would break the bank."
Amber Angel decided to enroll in college soon after her daughter Lennon, now 7, was born. “I wanted to make something of myself, so that I could provide for her better.” Angel was 21 at the time, working part-time at the Gap.

Child care costly proposition for parentsEducation Week (subscription)all 11 news articles »
When Donald Trump announced his new child care plan last month, which included six weeks of paid maternity leave for women, I thought, A step forward in policy; a step backward in language. His rhetoric focused on mothers—there was little mention of stay-at-home dads like me. And that hurts moms, dads, and all primary caregivers.
Yesterday, NPR highlighted the phenomenon researchers refer to as “satellite babies” in expensive-to-live cities like New York and Boston. A satellite baby is one born to immigrant American new parents who are forced to send their children to their home country to live with their grandparents. The children return in time to start school in the States, and the parents save money on expensive child care as they build their savings.
The federal government has relied on fewer than five departmental investigators across Australia to probe child care fraud estimated to run into the billions of dollars.
As state and federal education ministers scramble to deal with the long-standing rorting of Family Day Care subsidies, a Fairfax Media investigation has found the national Child Care Fraud Investigations Team has been overwhelmed for months.
