  • Are you prepared to wait another year?

The 2023-2024 season has just ended and one question is on everyone’s lips: has the Habs progressed?
Obviously, some players have improved. Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky are two names that come quickly to mind, but many have taken Josh Anderson one step further.
But in the end, if we judge the Habs by their record, it’s clear that the progression isn’t exactly marked. The club still has one fewer win than last year, despite eight more points in the standings.

  • “Salt Lake sucks: a hard day after eve for Coyotes fans

That’s it: the Coyotes have played the last game of their history in Phoenix. From now on, the franchise that was originally founded in Winnipeg will be moving to Salt Lake City.
Confirmation should come today after a vote by the governors (a meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m.), but Ryan Smith, the future owner of the franchise, has said it all: it’s pretty well done.
It’s always sad to see fans lose their team. After all, even if hockey has no place in Arizona, the fact remains
  • Top-3: One last win in Arizona to overtake the Habs in the standings

The NHL season draws to a close…
Last night, four games were played across the league. The Coyotes game was the most closely watched, because it had an impact on the Habs’ lottery standings.
    Let’s see how it went:

  • Logan Mailloux: Alex Burrows sees Shea Weber in him

It was time to take stock today at the Tricolore. After a difficult season in terms of results, an atmosphere of optimism reigned at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard.

  • Québec would be virtually guaranteed a team in a 36-club league

When it comes to the Nordiques in Quebec City, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Every time the project seems dead and buried, a new ideology surfaces and revives the debate.
This is once again the case, even though Quebec City was never considered for the relocation of the Coyotes to Salt Lake City. Worse still, the two cities currently favoured to host an NHL team are Atlanta and Houston.
But that wouldn’t be the end of it. David Ettedgui mentioned last week that the
  • Simon Boisvert: Logan Mailloux will only be a sixth NHL defenseman

Logan Mailloux played his first NHL game last night at the Bell Centre, and looked great doing it. Beyond his assist on Newhook’s goal, he looked right at home on the ice. If he was nervous, it didn’t show.
It’s amazing what a season in Laval has given him in terms of composure and confidence. He’s not the same player he was at training camp, which is great news for the whole organization.
Even so, Simon Boisvert doesn’t think Mailloux’s ceiling with the Habs
  • Kaiden Guhle, the next Habs general (according to Stéphane Robidas)

Not much was known about Kaiden Guhle before the Canadiens selected him with the 16th pick of the 2020 draft.
The defenseman played in the West (WHL) and wasn’t talked about as the next NHL star.
That said, we’ve grown to love the left-hander since his arrival in Montreal.
Guhle will probably never be a 45-50+ point defenseman, but he excels defensively, and we agree that’s what he’s best at.

  • Can we stop thinking about swapping Mike Matheson

Mike Matheson played his second season in a Canadian uniform. And it went very well.
The Quebec defenseman enjoyed the best campaign of his career, scoring 11 goals and 62 points in 82 games. It’s hard to believe that Kent Hughes didn’t make a good move, picking him up in Pittsburgh (for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling) almost two years ago…
Matheson is young (he just turned 30) and his contract runs out at the end of the 25-26 season. He earns an annual salary of $4.875 million,
  • Logan Mailloux named to AHL All-Star team (rookies)

Logan Mailloux’s season isn’t remembered because he played a game with the Canadiens last night.
We remember it because he was one of the AHL’s best defensemen in his first pro season.
And that’s saying a lot.The defenseman had a superb year in Laval, amassing 47 points (14 goals) in 70 games so far with the Rocket.
I say so far, because the Habs still have two games left before the end of the season.
That said, Mailloux’s season has not gone unnoticed, as he was s
  • Nick Suzuki: We’re not far from the playoffs and competing for the cup

Hearing the players and staff talk to the media this morning, you could sense how proud everyone is of the team’s progress.
    And rightly so.
The Montreal organization has a plan in mind, and to see that the club has improved every year for the past two years is as encouraging for the organization as it is for the team’s fans.
The season might have been even better for the Habs if Kirby Dach hadn’t been injured in Game 2, and if Jake Allen hadn’t had a two-game winning str
  • Josh Anderson’s season of misery: “I have no excuses”.

Josh Anderson got away with it this season. Why would he do that? We don’t know.
He wasn’t injured enough to miss many games, but he never managed to make a difference on the ice. He was probably the player who most disappointed Canadiens fans this season… and we’re not sure why.
During his end-of-season media debriefing, the man himself said he wasn’t looking for excuses: he knows he didn’t play well this year. No need to draw him a picture.
    Josh Anderson:
  • Chris Wideman denies announcing his retirement

On this day of reckoning for the Canadiens, several players talk to media representatives.
One of them? Chris Wideman, who didn’t play all season for the Habs. He was injured and didn’t even come close to returning to play for the Flannel in 2023-2024.
Yesterday, he gave Simon-Olivier Lorange a lengthy interview on the subject. The La Presse journalist reported that the player was retired.
“All the difficulties, the pain, the sleepless nights, the doubts, the demons… It
  • Joshua Roy took part in Rocket training this morning

Joshua Roy’s last game was on March 19.
He played in the Montreal Canadiens’ uniform against the Oilers in Edmonton…
But he injured his hand and hasn’t played since.
The Habs sent him to Laval (paper trade) at the last deadline, so the Quebecer has a chance to play in the AHL playoffs (if healthy).
    It’s been a while since we’ve heard from him…
But the good news is that Roy was on the ice this morning with his Rocket teammates.

  • Goalkeeper Debate #1: Samuel Montembeault (finally) publicly rewarded

At the start of the season, Jake Allen was clearly the Canadiens’ #1 goaltender. Martin St-Louis trusted him because (among other things) he was the veteran of the group and the other two hadn’t proven anything.
Then, as the games progressed, it became clear that the #1 goalie was Samuel Montembeault.
But the longer the season went on, the clearer it became that Montembeault was the goalie you could trust. He had the big duels and the biggest workload.
But did he have the title offi
  • Kent Hughes won’t buy out a contract this summer

The Canadiens’ season is officially over.
Habs executives (especially Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton) will have to focus on what’s coming up in the next few weeks… namely, the draft and the opening of the free agent market.
Because, yes, a lot is going to happen between now and the start of the Habs’ next season.Summer also means contract buyouts.
The various NHL clubs often take advantage of this to buy out the contract of a guy who’s no longer producing because he&
  • Jeff Gorton opens the door to the free agent market

It’s review day for the Canadiens. It starts with Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.
First, we learned that Martin St-Louis’ contract had been extended to 2027 via a contract option. Seeing him stay was to be expected, but now it’s official.
So, the group remains in place to keep the players who are already here happy… but also for the players who are not in the organization.
After all, as we all know, if everyone keeps saying that the playoffs are within reach, that means it
  • Brendan Gallagher: the resurrection of the (little) Christ

And how did you like Logan Mailloux’s first game? And Lane Hutson’s second?
I thought the Franco-Ontarian Mailloux was good, even solid. He picked up an assist on a superb zone exit, he finished his game at plus-1, he directed pucks on net, he gave out shoulder shots and he defended well.
Mailloux was less flashy than Hutson, but he got the job done. It’s encouraging for the future. I don’t see how Mailloux could be cut after the Habs‘ next training camp. Especiall
  • Martin St-Louis signs three-year contract with the Canadiens

Prior to today’s press briefing, Kent Hughes announced that Martin St-Louis, who had just one season left on his contract, will be in town for another three years.
Why? Because, in addition to his next contract year (2024-2025), he also had two option years (from 2025 to 2027), which we didn’t know – and which the coachdidn ‘t say yesterday. And according to the DG, the two-year option has been activated.
So he’ll be there until 2026-2027.
    No surprise here, Kent Hu
  • Fans could hardly love Lane Hutson more

That’s it: the Canadiens’ season is over. Do you think it’s a shame or not?The Canadiens ended their season with a 5-4 shootout loss. Martin St-Louis’s men once again squandered an early lead. That’s four times in a row.
In fact, yesterday, the Habs escaped three leads.
But what made the game so unique was the fact that, for the first time at home, Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux were in uniform. They got to play in front of Habs fans.
    It was Hutson’s second p

  • Martin St-Louis is not worried about his contract

Tonight, of course, there was the Red Wings-Canadian game to watch. The Habs lost in overtime – again.
But as it marked the end of the Flanelle’s season, there were still issues to watch out for. Many people spoke for the last time this season.
    Of the lot? Martin St-Louis.
The coach, who says he’s proud of his group, liked the progress this season. He doesn’t know what awaits his team next year, and he knows that patience has an expiration date, but his has clearly not y

Finally! The 2023-2024 season came to an end tonight against the Detroit Red Wings.
The game had no significant stakes for the Habs, but the opposite was true for the opponents, who were playing for their season.

  • Chris Wideman’s post-career with the Habs: both sides have held discussions

    Have you forgotten Chris Wideman?
I’ll admit it: I’d forgotten he was in the Habs organization, buried on the long-term injured list all season. In 2023-2024, he didn’t play a single game in the big league. At least, his contract expires next July.
And he’s confirmed that he won’t be signing another one, either with Montreal or another team. He will be retiring, he confirmed to Simon-Olivier Lorange, who gave LaPresse a summary of his interview with him.
